Our syndicate numbers at Tengs for the year were more than 50% down on last year. Most fish were caught on worms except mine which were on the fly.
I have also spoke with others here in Stavanger and the same story is repeated everywhere. I know fly fishers who catch 10 - 20 salmon in a normal season and are only reporting 5 - 10.
Any others like Stu got any reports from SW Norway or other areas that have seen a drop in fish numbers.

Interesting you wrote that Castelforte,i heard the sales of season tickets in Bjerkreim was down, nearly everyone i spoke to said it had been a terrible season for them.Myself i had between 15 and 20 fish, not all in sone 3 though, and very few grilse, the best part were fish to about 6 kilos. With all the rain i noticed fish didn't stop up long in sone 3,but catches were reported good in sone 5,a lot of fish 4 and 5 kilos Come the end of the month the stats will be put out so we will see then,BEEL had been worried early on in the season, and offered the netsmen a payoff to sit on there @rses

Stu,
In Scotland the fish returns are done in numbers so I was wondering how many fish that is?
Do they split it out into 1SW and 2SW+ or by weight range?

Salmo Another week or so then it will be out in more detail, split into weeks and the three weight classes,up to 3kg,3kg to 7kg and over 7kilos Stu, Thanks for that. I hope you don't think I was being impolite about the fish sizes and all that. I am genuinely interested given the history of acid rain and the loss of some of the really large salmon in the SW rivers (Mandal, Otra) I have fished in Norway many times and can attest that the grilse and seatrout that run up you short fast west coast rivers are simply amongst the hardest fighters you can imagine. There must be something about them having to be a particularly strong genetic strain to even attempt running up fresh water. So it is not just about weight. I appreciate your feedback and any other news from Norway. salmo

Do these west coast fish mainly come in from the Faroes, Greenland or up North into the Arctic Circle? My line of thought is that they may have a short journey back to their rivers.

Salmo No bother, last season the catch was 11.8ton for the whole,in Bjerkreim it was 6850 kg,that was for 4104 fish,an average of 1.66 kg.Predomenantly a grilse river, but there are fish caught each year between 10 and 15kg.This year as far as i saw the size of the fish was a little bigger. Mandal this year had quite a bad season with 6,600kg compaired to over 12,000kg last year

Stu, Thanks for following up with the data on your river. I am looking for more data on SW Norway to share with the people here because it is very accessible place to fish given that you can fly from London, Aberdeen or Newcastle to Stavanger in about 1 hour odd and be fishing some of those rivers within 3 - 4 hours drive. It is a perfect location for a long weekend given that the Norwegians allow fishing on a Sunday. salmo

Stu,
Nice fish and often very hard fighting in that size. I have had a fair few seatrout out of the Bjerkreim but most people seem surprised that there are many in the river.
I see you are using a single hander do you use spey lines or shooting heads?

Castelforte Took some holding in about 100cubics,when it decided it wanted to go back over Laksheim.I also had a good few seatrout, the most were very small, biggest about 0.75kg That is a 10ft rod i use,and have various shooting heads and a WF multi tip,get better distance with the heads,i use them in the salt as well

Stu,
Do you know Steven Mear at Kvaeven. He's an englishman who has settled in Norway. He is FFF and AAPGAI 2 hand casting instructor. He has the full range of Thomas and Thomas 2 handers. He also has the same white T&T rod that Simon Gawesworth uses in his videos. Most of the time he fishes a single hander due to the size of the river.
