Just reread this thread and decided I'm going to try 1 1/2" tubes on an intermediate line more often this season, particularly on the Conwy where the fish do seem to like a bigger fly.
As Exerod once said, I'll report back on my failure in due course. ;D

Welcome to the forum.
I look forward to seeing the Flee's you use for the Sea Troot.

i conform to the larger fly myself on the conway with a smaller fly on the dropper[ big fish chasing little fish] i no longer use snake fly,s but tubes instead. all my fish last year were caught on this set up i would only use smaller flies if the pool was lacking in current or the river was very low ,but even so have you seen the size of the mouth on a 2lb seatrout they will swallow a large fly no problem watch them attack a surface lure that tells you everything you need to know [just my thoughts ]

I reckon the fish had just run in. ;D

nice when a plan comes together isnt it ,i remember tying on a size 8 single while fishing the upper reaches of the conway when the bailiff turned up he promply told me to cut it off and put a large black and silver ali tube on he was right i had three good fish on it at the tail of the pool in the fast water ive never forgot that hence my way of thinking [ a big fly will catch a big fish ] mind you there has been plenty of times when ive though that a smaller fly would gett a better response but i do tend to get less fish on the larger tubes but they have improved in size

It was probably the same bailiff (Bob), the night after I'd shown him my tube fly. ;D

conway rod would that have been bob wilson by any chance , he showed me the biggest medicene fly i have ever seen which he had to remove from a log in the beaver pool it cost one of the rods a sewin about 12lb as the hook and the fish were snagged on a sunken log

For those who don't know the Conwy, Beaver Pool is an enormous pool below the junction of the Conwy and Lledr:

I personally don't think that one can generalise about the size/pattern of ST flies. There are two many other factors. Fish what you are confident with, and don't be frightened to 'break the local advice'. This happened to me on the Nith a few years ago. He had never seen snake flies before and said I was wasting my time! Not so, as he blanked and I caught 3 and had a lot of sport (tweaks) on a very bright night. By all traditional 'rules' I should have just gotten back in my car and went home to Edinburgh!
