I'm off to Alaska this August, but have no idea of the kind of tackle and flys I will need.some heads up would be great,so if I need to,I can start to pick up some tackle now ,saving me from buying it all at once and stop her indoors taking a fit Prices for rods, reels and lines are much less over there, so well worth holding off some purchases until you get there, you can always sneek it back and hope she doesnt notice. ;D When I went over there in 1997, everyone just used single handers, generally a 10ft #8 rod for the silvers and chums, which would be the ones you would be targeting in August. If going now, I would be inclined to use a switch rod or shorter double hander in the 12 to 13ft range rated #7-8 or #8-9 if fishing a larger river or the water is higher. You have to go down to these fish, they are much less inclined to rise to a fly than our atlantic salmon, so sink tips lines are required. I would opt for Skagit lines with a selection of sinking tips, including heavy T14 or T17 tips. The flies used are often weighted and the ones I had most success with included the Purple Egg Sucking Leach, the Battle Creek Special and the Flash Fly.

Thats where I stayed for a couple of days before heading out to the rivers. I took some tackle with me but bought quite a bit of it there. Like I said it was quite a few years ago so some of the tackle shops may have changed, maybe someone has been there recently and can update things, but the ones I went to were, Mountain View Sports - this had a very large range of fishing tackle and was well worth visiting Gary Kings - this was a large supermarket sized shop with fishing tackle, hunting and outdoor gear The other one was a flyshop in the centre of Anchorage whose name I have forgotten.
