Can any of you folk point me towards a good source for making my own lures, spoons, spinners, flying C's etc. I am a fly fisher at heart but I want to get some local schools interested in fishing sports. I am planning some talks and river visits and I thought that I would make things interactive by getting the kids to make some spinners as it might be easier than setting them all up with fly tying gear.

Hi Logie - John Monteith (Willie The Ghillie) on the SFF produced some pretty fancy lures a couple of years ago - maybe he still has the 'kit' and, as yours is a non profit venture, he might lend you some materials or equipment. PM him. Regards STip

Hi Logie - it is www.salmosalar.proboards80.com - I am sure John will be able to give you some solid advice. Failing this you can contact him via the Fishtay website (Newtyle Beat). Hope this helps.

McHardys also has a website with extensive Spinner/Lure making parts. I have been informed that if you require mail order from here that it is best to check availability by phone before ordering. Here is a link to the relevant pages on their site: www.mchardys.co.uk/acatalog/Spinner_Parts.html

I think most of Jock's lures (flying C's) were made by salmonnut - I got some last year along with some cracking Devon Minnows in an auction on the other board to raise funds for the Tay WCP.
PM Salmonnut on the other board for assistance as he is the man for making lures...
The Devons are absolutely cracking - completely hand made - every bit as good as anything you can buy in the shops.
The Flying C's are also made to a much higher standard than any I have seen at extortionate prices in the shops. The one which seems to do the business is black body/pink head with copper or silver blade. In using this the first time I went spinning I had 4 follows/lost 4 due to noy paying attention/too busy watching the fish following the lure. 2nd time out took 2.
Glasgow Angling Centre also do a range of lure making kits.

Spintec have quality components and if your going to keep this lure making up its worth investing in some lead moulds etc to make you own baits and keep price right down(maybe as low as 60-70p for a top quality flying c)
Laytex bodies are superb and do outlast normal silicone but are more expensive and making normal bodies from lengths of silicone is easy and works out at least a third cheaper than pre cut laytex bodies..im a great believer than round beads are far superior to pear drops and 8mm round beads can can be sourced cheapley and colours can be varied and down to personal choice(mine being a flouro yellow not that i think it makes much difference as the flying c is a glorified mepp and its the blade that does the damage...no blade no fish???)
0.8mm would be my choice of wire with a good quality stainless wire and a 4mm metal bead with a good quailty medium clevis and quailty blade...these are the important pieces of the bait....
