However, every time the subject comes up on forums, I see a great swathe of pretentious, elitist and quite frankly, snobbishly ignorant people wading into the pool, causing unwarranted waves. Dear blairyboy I'd say the above made me think the post was partly an attack on the so called classes, for me it also sadly undermined buntinbee's argument.

"I really can't understand why so many people are fixated by the alleged class aspect of my submission. Having told you I catch 50% of my fish on the fly why should I then be so crass as to give the impression that I think ALL fly fishers are snobs. It seems the Beer/G&T thing has set some people off on the wrong track. I see that blairyboy has not swallowed that red herring. God alone knows what hornets' nest I would have stirred up if I had used sexual orientation instead of drink as an example! The thrust of my submission was that I find it annoying that as soon as spinning is mentioned SOME fly fishers immediately appear in print to denigrate it and attempt to present anglers who spin as some sort of children of a lesser God. These are the people I perceive as snobbish and elitist - not the large majority of fly fishers who are perfectly reasonable and willing to live and let live. They accept the fact that there are no better ways - only different ways. I have no objection to anyone having a personal preference in anything(as a matter of complete irrelevance I prefer a malt whisky to beer) To illustrate my point here are some examples : "To fly fish for salmon puts a person in main game where as to spin for salmon well it just is not in the same league" "As for being snobbish well maybe I am to some" "A fly caught fish is more worthy than a a bait caught one" "Better if you had caught them on the flee" "Why can't these people fish the fly "No no no teach your boys to fly fish. Teaching them to spin is a backward step" "Leave spinners etc to stretches inaccessible to fly" "Shame if it was caught on a spinner" I could go on but I'm sure you can now get my drift.

Buntinbee,
Good to read your comments and opinions. On this forum everyone has them and are free to voice them; whilst others are in turn free to disagree with them. I think a few of your original comments about the attitude of some fly fishers (as highlighted by Speyducer), whilst as you say only apply to a small number of individuals, are easy to take personally though, by individuals who both spin and fly fish for different reasons, hence the reaction.
Suggest we move on or do any of your original questions or comments still need answers?
Tight lines, Nolon.

The method is great in waterfall pools because you can cast up into the fast water and with a decent weight you can bring your tube fly down through the deeper pools and the fly will really dance amongst the salmon who are circulating or bothering each other.
A light plastic tube of 2" gets a good knocking about in fast water while the weight steadies the line and holds depth.

To put the "cat" amongst the pigeons i would have said that the most skilfull way of catching salmon is with a small weight and a good lobworm, searching the water. Nowadays i tend to stick to the fly simply because thats the method that i enjoy the most. If the rules say spinning is allowed then good luck but i get bored with it so no longer spin. Haveing spent a day harling on the lower reaches of the Tay that is definatly the most boreing way of trying for a fish. In my view we should be fishing for enjoyment with what ever method we prefer provided it is allowed and does not spoil others day
