In the relatively little time I have been salmon fishing, circa 10, years I have never seen an individual beat catch of more than 44 Salmon. Accomplished by the Junction yesterday as most will already know.
I was wandering if anybody has any information of a better individual beat day? Clearly the number of rods fishing is going to be a factor.
Is Junction 6? If so 7.3 is the key number (fish per rod for day - for the day in question)

Myself, Willie Gunn and Silversalar once had 23 off a beat on the Spey in one day, which works out at 7.67 per rod.

No pressure on you for Monday now Graham. Be assured the camera is fully charged and I will be writing a detailed report for this forum. Hope we don't have to use photoshop to create one!

Although the junction had the biggest catch of all the beats this week, hendersyde had 20 for 2 rods on Wednesday, 10 fish per rod . I think per rod this is the best beat on the Tweed.

Nigel Fell at boleside told me the beat record for a single rod was 22 -25 fish ( can't remember the precise figure), not so long ago either.

a friend of mine was on the teith last week, I think it was wednesday when three rods fished from 9-45 to 2-30, they hooked 32 and landed 31 of them, my friend had 15 to his own rod, and lost the only one!!! not a bad day!!!! ;D

I think that it is generally accepted that on Tweed at least, West Learmouth has the highest rod/fish average.
2 rod beat 5 yr average 156.3 per rod.
Junction 124.3 per rod
Hendersyde and Sprouston have higher averages now but the beats used to fish more rods, I am not sure how long ago this was.

Hendersyde and Sprouston have higher averages now but the beats used to fish more rods, I am not sure how long ago this was. It must have been a very long time ago, if ever, and I think they have only ever been 2 rod beats - certainly they were 2 rod beats 25 years ago. I've heard it said that Jim Miller/Harris & Sheldon/Heritage wanted to increase the rod nos, but the owner of Hendersyde wouldn't have it. The only thing I can think of is that I have a vague memory of an article in T&S many years ago about a new beat that was created at Eden Water Foot, right at the bottom of the beat, which was rarely fished as there was so much good water elsewhere. Don't know what happened to it - I think it wasn't all that good except in high water - was it reabsorbed into the main fishings?

Charlie, Happy to stand corrected on Sprouston and Hendersyde, I am only a yopunster!!
I think that the Viper who had Tweedside tackle had the lease on Eden Foot, tried to blag a few days off him but it was always taken. Still a privated beat not available through Fishtweed.
How was Mr Eadie?

Could someone explain to me why the junction pool's so prolific? I remember watching a TV series where Jack Charlton was there watching a lady catch one after the other.

Two reasons,,a big bloody cauld, that stops the fish at certain height's of water,,ie low,,also this is where the teviot meets the tweed,,so teviot running fish tend to stop off here waiting for water,,you can just imagine the tweed being in spate and the teviot not,,junction would still hold fish.

Hi James,
Never had the pleasure of fishing there, but, the simple reason why the Junction is so prolific is that it is just as its name implies - the junction of the Teviot with the Tweed. And when waters meet, the upwards running salmon dally longer before they make up their minds which stream they will run up.
As they stay longer, they are more likely to be tempted to fly & other lure.

after fishing scotland for2 years, i am happy to be back to my local fishing were after a days work i can drive down and catch 20 - 30 salmon before it gets dark, i had a great time and most likely return, although the 0 fish spring days took a little getting used too.

"after a days work I can drive down and catch 20 - 30 salmon before it gets dark" ... Do you live by a fish farm?
If not a fish farm, please give location and booking details.
