I'm not there yet, but will be on the way this time next week. Dana, from Speypages, who will be instructing for the week, just forwarded these pictures... This is Ryan Petzold, a guide from Streamborn Co, who is up there as I write this, and he has 2 more days fishing to go. The report has been good, and this one has the stamp of Skeena spring steel!! Hopefully, he will leave a few undisturbed for this time next week! Mike

Now that is a powerful fish Mike- How big was it? Knocking on 30? I didn't get a report of it's weight (probably NOT weighed - as is usual for the steelies!), but it certainly appears to be into the lower 20's, IMO. I may be able to get the low-down of his party's full week from Ryan before I leave next Friday. Just a couple half that size would do me!! Mike

Fantastic post Mike, looks like you had a superb trip and caught some great fish.
Some big steelhead there, what size do they run to?
Is that whitefish a grayling?

A great trip, yes. Not for the numbers of fish, which tend to be low per rod-week, perhaps 2 to 5 fish (steelhead) for the week is the norm (I beached 3 in the 10 days, but had 5 good pulls/hook-ups on one day), and with a smattering of bulltrout/char, and the chance of a chinook too. The whitefish (local name) must be of the grayling family, as it has an adipose fin, and the head, mouth & eyes, and overall shape are features identical to grayling, but the colouration is more bland, and the dorsal fin is small & not sail-like. This one (the only one I got in the 2 trips there) was around 2lb+ and fought very hard, and had taken a large 2"+ fly due for steelies fished in a fast stream. The bulltrout were very obliging, and the larger one at my feet was 7lb+, and both myself & the guide thought it was a steelie until almost the very last moment of it coming to hand! The steelhead in the Skeena system & the surrounding rivers (Kitimat, Nass, Copper, Kalum etc) can go very big; I believe the record is somewhere over 40lbs. Spring steelies are usually in the teens (of the three I beached, two were in the low teens, and one in the quite high teens - none weighed!) but fish of 20lb+ are not unusual. Very powerful fish, but the classical acrobatics are more usually observed in the summer fish. We were fishing in very low temperatures, water temp first off in morning well below 40F, the lowest recorded when we were fishing was 34.6F, and rising through to lunch/mid-afternoon to low 40's. Fish generally came on the take when water temp got above 40.5F. Icing of the lines & rod guides did occur on two or three days through to about lunchtime due to low air temps also. I'm going back in '09, but have elected to go for August, where the chance of a chinook should be substantially higher, and I will get the opportunity to cast a few dries & wakers at the steelies. Mike

Fantastic pictures Mike.
It must be some thrill casting a flee in rivers and scenery like that. The steelheads look like they would give you a thumping fight.
