Thanks John. I guess its much the same down your way - they are there but not in any numbers as yet. Like I say, a bit of fresh water would help. I assume the restriction order has now been lifted and that lamson is once more allowed unaccompanied access to water ? - send him my best regards.

Last night (Saturday) I couldn't face being forced to watch mediocre European football or Big Brother on the telly so I popped up to the Don at Kinnaldie (near Fintry) for a wee thrash of the water. About 9.30pm I caught this fish on a stoats tail fished on my salmon rod. It fairly got my newly acquired Sharpes The Gordon reel screaming. It was around 21" long with really broad shoulders and I reckon it was around the 3.5 lb mark. The quality of the photo is pretty naff (taken very quickly on a mobile phone) but if you look closely at it's back just behind it's dorsal fin you'll see something earlier in the fish's life took a big divot out the fish's back - it's now totally healed over but it was a fair chunk that was missing. PS – thanks to those who contributed to the Ratchet Reel thread earlier this year. You convinced me to get my ‘new’ reel and the racket it created when the fish surged down the pool made the catching experience so much better. ;D ;D

Looks a decent trout Andy, what weight? Deceiving angle of picture Graham - it wasn't that big ..... 2lbs + - but excellent sport on a single handed rod nevertheless. Stickleback - nice troot min ! Thats some density of spots on the head and gill casing ! Are all the Don sea trout like that ? Certainly don't get that density of markings on Esk fish. STip

Nice fish and nice reel stickleback. I didn't realise that Sharpes did reels. Where did you get it? Or is it a vintage one? Looks as new as the rod (and the trout)

It was a cracking night for sea troot fishing. Warm and overcast with fish showing. I opted for the drain pool and fished the neck from 10pm on wards. A floating line 11ft leader with a size 11 silver stoats for starters. As the light started to fade the fish became more active with one after another darting forward through the fast water which was only a rods length away. 11pm and it started to get darker and the bats were looking more of a bet than a wee silver bullet as they were not interested in any of my offerings. 12pm things looked promising and the excitement gained momentum as i had my first pull of a fish albeit briefly. 5 secs and the blighter was off. 1pm and it was lights oot and i felt i could comfortably edge along the bank without spooking any fish, so much so i decided to cross the river above the neck onto the other side to see if i could locate the hot spot where they had shoaled. A couple of casts later produced two wee phat broonies about 3/4lb. Not what i was after but perfect specimens indeed. As the light was back with us at 02.30am it was back to stealth mode and a larger fly. I whacked on a snake fly that Eskimoo had kindly donated for my fly box ;D. This and then collie dogs never produced any fish and thus a blank was had for the wee silvery sea troots. A very enjoyable night in excellent company as usual and one that has wet the appetite for this years Sea Troot fishing. Cheers Hornet

Thats some density of spots on the head and gill casing ! Are all the Don sea trout like that ? STip Sorry - I haven't a clue as it's the first one I've caught on the Don ! (I only took up salmon & seatrout angling a couple of years ago and this is my first real season on the Don) Re the Sharpes reel - I'm not sure how old it is but I'm pretty sure it would be classed as vintage - I bought it from a mate who got it off Ebay then found it was surplus to his requirements - it's in immaculate condition. My only observation with it is that you can't palm the reel to control it - you just have to let the fish take as much line as it wants or risk your fingers trying to slow it down I only got the reel 3 days before the fish so I was tickled pink to have success on my first outing with it. I still smirk each time I recall the lovely sound it made It's partnered up with a Shakespeare Oracle.

I've just read a report saying that net caught sea trout on the Annan this season are all very plump, which is a good sign.

Got off the mark tonight on the Elwy with a 1lber and lost another . Not the biggest fish, but I was starting to worry I might have a blank June. Quite a bit of activity until 12.00, then somebody flicked a switch.

Also managed to get my first sea trout of the season over the past few days. Had a 4lb'er off the Tyne, and a brace off the Border Esk above Langholm over the weekend.
Have a few photos of the Border Esk which i will add after work.

Well done John, seems to be a few on the go ,yesterday tweedsider and myself took off to a small burn ,a trib on the till and we saw fish running mostly whitling in the 1,to 1/12 lbs, this burn is no more than 4ft wide and we saw one shoal of twenty or so fish, could be a long summer for these if the rain stops.
