Yes, 24.3kg - a little over 53 lbs!! That fish was landed from the Alta, but only after she had already landed a 16kg (35lber). The bigger fish was a bit more of a struggle to land, as she had foul-hooked it near the tail - but she still had the energy to club the fish out of the gene pool That's Norwegian fishing culture for you. They must have large pots in which to cook such MSW fish in!!! Mike PS. The Alta is not the only place where 24kg fish can be taken - one was taken at that size from the R Kola on the week I was there!!! M

As most of you probably don't speak or read norwegian, it should be mentioned that the subject monster salmon was dead when landed. Being foul-hooked in the tail appearantly has a tendency to "drown" the fish due to water flowing through the gills the wrong way.
The fish is dead, but it was not clubbed.
This is the biggest salmon I've read about so far this season. They've caught three +20 kg fish in Namsen, and they all looked pretty dead hanging there from their tails.

Inge Please accept my most humble apologies for making a wrong assumption about 'dispatch' of the fish. One can imagine that dragging the fish the wrong way in the water, and the prolonged fight would not be healthy for any fish, let alone a specimen of this size. It is of note that last year, the largest fish taken on the R Kola in early June (20kg) was also brought in virtually dead, as it had bled badly from the fly stuck in the gill-rakers, and that is a river with "100% catch & release" for visiting anglers (non-Russians), so these dramas do happen even to large fish everywhere, sadly. On a lighter note, how has been the reception of the new rules for fishing for & taking salmon in Norway, as such new rules, I understand, have been introduced this year? Mike

Thanks for the explanation Inge.
The young lass must have had sore arms after pulling a 53lb salmon backwards through a swift flowing river like the Alta.
I once hooked a 7lb sea trout in the tail and it took ages to get in, and that was in a slow pool.

Mike,
I think you are right in that some of these monster salmon might be difficult to revive after a long fight. As far as the Alta salmon, I think it's safe to assume that it would have been killed regardless. Sad, but true. It will take time before the concept of C&R becomes accepted along norwegian rivers. Personally, I like the russian way, 100% C&R, end of story. If you don't like it, go somewhere else, f.ex. Norway. Remember a nice fish I caught in Ponoi some years back. I had gill hooked it, and it was bleeding profusely. Still had to put it back. It was floating down the river, belly up, and probably became a nice meal for the resident seagulls.
I spent the first week of the season at the Kola River, and after a week of nothing, except cold weather, I almost wished I had foul hooked something.

That leaves the girl with an average of 20 kg/fish for the season. I doubt anybody can match that....smile. Not sure if remember this correctly, but I think wondergirl made her debut as a salmon angler this season. Some start.
