I tied this fly up last night. It has no name because I couldn't think of anything that seemed relevant enough for it. I would welcome any suggestions that any of you could make regarding potential improvements or moderations. The pattern is: Hook: Size 4 single Thread and body: Black thread Rib: Fine silver wire Underwing: Yellow pheasant feather Wing: Rolled bronze mallard Hackle: Red pheasant feather

I think you are on the right lines there spruce but "anorexic mackerel" is too much of a mouthful... How about shortening it to the Annie Mac Spaterunner I'd be happy to fish it as it is but you could put a strand or two of sparkly stuff in the wing. I think it would look nice with a copper tinsel body too... but that way lies madness and too many boxes of variants that never get a swim... but then again why not Andy

A "feel good" flee. Said it before on numerous occasions - I ain't a fly tyer but I reckon I know what a guid flee looks like ..... when I see it. For me, the simplicity is what its about therefore I would be careful of over elaboration. I could live with the merest hint of Jungle Cock and perhaps a copper, or half copper, body. Maybe a wee bit of white in the throat hackle - but just a wee bit. "Simple is good" (Benny - Crossroads). STip ps - how about "The Spaterunner" as a name (or is there one already ? ) Alternatively, "The Red Mackerel".

It's a fairly non-descript pattern, promising much but yet to prove itself, so how about "Gordon Brown". ;D

If you like the fly and as you don't tie yourself if you pm me your address I will send you a few Any fly that carries the same sorry name as yours truly is destined to achieve total and absolute failure so thank you for the suggestion of caling it Spaterunner but I would just hate to tempt fate

Nice simple pattern, doesn't need anything else. Apart from maybe shortening the wing so that the tip is level with the hookbend if not a bit shorter than that.

A very kind gesture indeed SR ..... but one to respectfully decline. I baulk at the thought of certain forum members (hornet) being allowed any additional mileage from the fact that I had, once more, "manged to relieve some well meenin barsteward 'o thur flee's" due to pity, a lack of tying prowess or both. Better that we anticipate a chance meeting sometime the future where both greetings and flee's can be exchanged in a riverside setting. Failing that - stick half a dizzen in the post - mind the JC and bronze boady - wee doubles if possible. best regards STip

Its a funny thing, I tied up a similar (heavier dressed) fly, but a small black over wing and natural guinnea fowl hackle with a second hackle of yellow, took a salmon first evening out so named it after the pool, just a thought.

Spaterunner - flies arrived today and look splendid - very 'non-descript' - the hallmark of a good s/t flee some would say. Hope to give them a swim in the very near future and hope to return your generosity sometime. Many thanks. STip
eskimoo - will let you have a 'skek' at them when next we meet.

STip I just hope that they bring you a little success. Well actually loads of it . I had some interest expressed on Saturday evening on a fly tied to the the lighter dressed tying of the two that I sent you. I would be interested to know how you get on with them
