Hello all from Montana, USA – my wife and I will be visiting Scotland for our 20th anniversary this fall. We’ll be spending most of a week in the Cairngorms National Park area. I hope to sneak away a few times for a few hours to flick a fly around. Probably nothing to serious but had a few questions. I see that you have to reserve beats etc on the Spey which means a commitment and expense. Will I be missing out on a big opportunity if I fish on my own on other rivers? Do I have to reserve beats on other rivers within the park, such as the upper stretches of the Glen Feshie? I’ve never tried two handed with a Spey Rod and I am used to smaller rivers one handed and don’t have a whole day to commit and need to keep my expenses low. Any advise welcome.

Welcome to the forum Grizfisher, good to see a member from over the pond, and im sure you will have lots of interesting accounts of fishing in your neck of the world. As for fishing near Aviemore! Here is a few links that might be of use to you: www.fishpal.com/Scotland/Spey/Rothiemurchus/?dom=Speyor Here: www.fishpal.com/Scotland/Spey/Aviemore/?dom=SpeyThe problem you have with fishing in Scotland is that its nearly impossible to get a ticket for a few hours salmon fishing, as the permits (licence) are normally for the full day, at least!. However if there is permits available, they should be relatively inexpensive. The main reason is even at the time of the year when your heading over, there is not an abundance of salmon about so far up the system, seatrout - maybe more so. But if its just to flick a fly, then there is excellent trout fishing in the area. The main river - the Spey has day tickets available and if still waters rock your boat, then there are plenty of lochans/lochs around. There is also a stocked stillwater within the estate and that can be fun for a few hours. Whatever you decide, im sure you will have an excellent time in Scotland and we look forward to hear, how you got on.

Welcome to the forum GF. When you say "the fall" which month does this refer to ? Bear in mind that the Spey season, and it's tributaries, ends on September 30th.
If you want to keep costs down I would suggest the River Avon which is one of the river's main tributaries or perhaps the upper Findhorn.

Hi Gf, or the Dulnain which is a good sized tributary that joins the Spey between Grantown and Aviemore. I'm sure it can be fished by visitors with the Strathspey Angling Association ticket see www.speyfisheryboard.com/strathspey-angling-improvement-association/ The Dulnain gets a run of fish late on although they will be mostly coloured by September and should be returned. It is a lovely river; nice peaty water. BnC

Thanks for the information Gentlemen! Sinkingfish I will be there 16-28 Sep. Well guys from the sounds of things I think I'll enjoy fishing for trout. I've been flying around a bit on Google Earth and the rivers in the Highlands are awesome and I look so forward to my visit. Does anyone know much about the River Feshie, it looks very fun. I will be renting a small compact car, I'm I going to be able to get very far up river? I at least would like to get to a trailhead and start hiking to remote areas? Will there be Sea Trout up high in the mid Sep time frame?

Hey guys to fish for trout in these rivers you suggested (Findhorn, Dulnain, Avon) can I just purchase a permit when I get there and go? Or do I also need some sort of permission to fish these upper reaches?

You need permission to fish these rivers, permits for some stretches are available locally. For the Dulnain, you pick up the permit from Mortimers in Grantown, there is a stretch of association water on the Avon and tickets are available in Tomintoul, not sure about the Findhorn. The tickets for these beats are for salmon fishing but this will also cover you for trout fishing, they dont do trout only tickets.

Welcome to the forum. Still a little early in the season for the Ugie, I used to start picking up the sea trout there about the 3rd week of May and the first salmon/grilse usually are caught in July. Best of luck on Brae, it is fishing well at the moment.
