Timely to strike up a sea trout related conversation (a wee rise in night temps and water levels not withstanding)
Regardless of the method of retrieve the style should be smooth without jerkiness, as Mel Kreiger once said "think oil"
For the vast majority of rivers ,quality sea trout fishing is available for about 6 weeks per year, outside of this time span they'll be either few in number or the vast majority will be stale. ?
Discuss please.

No that was Robbie ;D,or was it Bobbie he's just been to Canada, wonder if he caught owt?
Yes the seatrout,i was quite surprised with my first on sat eve,not as clean as it shouldv'e been, although it was take able, they're normally chrome bright at this time of year, what i find every year in my local water is no matter what height the water is they just suddenly appear,,,,,magic.
Slow figure of 8 for me.

I've found a figure of 8 retreive successful for the slower pools, and have had many takes on long pulls once the fly has swung round

I remember when I was fishing a slow pool on the Lochy with Graham that he mentioned a constant motion to a worked fly was better. I have generally tried to adopt this since, although I do find a figure of eight a bit of a 'ball ache'

Generally find a constant motion is better but it is worth ringing the changes if this is not working.

Never been a 'twitcher' myself, preferring instead to go for a couple of long slow pulls - and why not ?
A BIG change in flee (dressing / size) must be fairly high up the 'fish inducing' stakes surely. ?

Reminds me of a story John Matherson told me on the Beauly whilst we were looking up to the dam from the bridge watching one of our party fishing off the Island into 'the Dam'. Apparently there were some passers by on the bridge and the fisher at the time, in the same location, was hunched over, and was working the fly with quite a quick erratic and enthusiastic 'twitching' of the line. Apparently it caused a laugh as it looked a little dodgy ;D

Took my first two Tweed system seatrout this morning in bright glaring sunlight at 7 am. HAving said that the water was still fairly coloured so it would cancel out some of the sun's brilliance. The first registered interest by the mearest gentle pluck, hardly discernable- another cast and a figure of eight retrieve as the fly came over the lie. A take- a head shake and then gone. Another cast and a 3lb fish took safely landed and returned. Ten minutes later another offer when the line was almost stationary in the centre of the pool, the take being registered by the line drawing tight even before it was felt. Another safely played, landed and returned, it would go around 4lb.
