Apart from one pool I know, where a SL is often first line of attack, I tend to try a surface lure when wet flies aren't producing any results. Changing over to a surface lure usually confirms that the river is devoid of fish. ;D
Surface lures are very successful on many Welsh rivers, and also the Annan, I hear. I've had some success with small surface lures and muddlers on the Elwy, and bigger 2" versions on the Conwy, but I think I'll try them more this season.

They work a dream on the Tywi - seem to be very good at pulling the big fish up throughout the season. I've even heard of a guy catching 1/2 dozen plus fish in a night when the river was coloured on them. Looking forward to having one rigged up in a couple of weeks!

I've had some success with muddlers on the Teign. Seems irresistable to the school peal. Haven't really bothered for the earlier fish- tubes seem the way to go.

Never really given surface or wake lures the time of night they probably deserve. Much for confident with conventional flee's in conventional sizes although I will ring the changes when things go quiet - usually with a larger flee (Waddington / small tube .... something like that) but for some reason ah canny quite get ma heid aroond fishing the "Timorous Beastie" .... or any rodent imitator come to think of it, but quite happy to concede that it might just be the fishing equivalent of my 'wee free' upbringing - Peter Ross, Silver Stoat, TB & S ... and variations thereof. A Scottish 'thang' perhaps ? regards STip

Ha, man who ask closed question get yes or no answer (best read with Chinese accent) Bet you were tempted back to contemplating the gnomic quality of my answer during the match though!! Gentlemen, when fishing floaty device for ST don't forget wet fly dropper 3' up, former brings 'em up, latter gets the take, well most of the time ime . Any thoughts on size of S/L in relation to pool depth?

Well done Graham.
Did you get many offers to the jambo? The usual surface lures seem to attract a lot of interest, but are poor hookers.

That was the only offer, but there are very few sea trout about this year. It didnt half hit it though.
