Well last night the conditions were perfect for sea trout fishing, and it was just a pleasure to be on the river. The river has dropped to its lowest level since May, it was a warm night and the half moon was partly veiled by thickish cloud. Fish were showing in the main holding pool, an otter was seen and an owl flew overhead in the gathering dusk. Conditions seemed perfect, probably the best this season. Certainly the first night I've fished in shirt sleeves! I didn't get to fish the main holding pool until fairly late, and the rest of the beat seemed quiet. Although the fish showed steadily until midnight, catches to the 5 rods on the beat were low, just one bright 3lber. I had just the one on-off pull, but it was good to see so many fish in the pool, and there's the weekend to look forward to.

There are a lot of small school sewin in the Mawddach and Wnion, with the emphasis on small.
Slightly concerned that some of the holding pools appear empty. Hopefully the bigger tides the week after next will pep things up.

Turned up at one of my favourite pools last night to find 8 people swimming and throwing stones. Heard later that people in wetsuits & snorkel, dinghies etc have been playing in the river over the last week or so. Managed a couple of fresh fish to 2lb, but the pool seemed quieter of late. The last few fish I've caught have been on the skinny side.

Just had it confirmed that a 13lb+ sea trout was caught on the Elwy last week, on fly at night.
The Elwy is a small river, can very productive in certain pools for 1-2lb sea trout, but 13lb is flippin enormous for the Elwy!!!

What did the lucky angler catch it on?

I'm told it was a local pattern, no name but basically a fairly small (size 12 LS + flying treble) fly, red body, silver rib and ginger streamer type wings, fished on a sinktip line. Caught after midnight in a deep holding pool.
The lucky angler is fairly old and in poor health, probably his catch of a lifetime.
