Hi Just returned from fishing the namson and the flam. I fished for two days of a seven day family holiday. The cost of the namson 1500 kor approx £150 , according to another fisher only one fish for the week but very bright sunshine temp mid 20's. Upper namson fishing well so far this season . Now the flam 3250 kor approx £325 (both these prices for 24 hours) the length of fishable water on the flam was 400ish yards. The water consisted of one deep pool ( 20 foot deep ) and one very fast flowing run . I managed to raise one fish from the deep pool in about 16 hours of fishing and saw nothing else . When i returned to the hotel i asked how many fish had been taken on the river this season ( 8 fishers per day ) 1 fish for the season !!!! Not great value for money me thinks . Mark

One doesn't have to go that far to spend real money on fishing. Worked out on a average cost per fish landed on Upper Caberston - Michael Evans water, & using their prices for 2008, & catch returns from 2007, we have: £423 av. cost per fish in November - ie you need to fish for 3 days to land one on average, and those 3 days have added incidentals - hotel, eats & drink, ghillie, travel etc - so probably takes the av. cost per fish landed to somewhere around £700 - and that's for November fish! For September on the same water, you would need to fish for 18 days on average to land one fish - that's ~£2400 per fish plus 18 days of accomodation, eats & drink, ghillie & travel, probably bringing the av. cost per landed September fish from Upper Caberston somewhere in the region of 4K! Makes going to Alaska, Canada, Pacific North West, Iceland & Russia more attractive??? Mike

Very interesting mike. shop around a bit and get some v.f.m on beats that are not ripping people off because of name or reputation. Get the conditions right on the bottom river and your fishing becomes very good v.f.m. regards mel/

Thank heavens there's more to salmon fishing than catching fish, or so I keep telling myself. ;D
The cost of catching a Tweed salmon in autumn is getting silly, but as Fishtweed shows, there's no shortage of rods prepared to pay. I enjoyed a few spring days on Tweed, but I'll be off to the Annan this autumn - good value if the river isn't the colour of cocoa!
