Mike, I am sure that within recent years a whole system of flood banks was built near Peebles to protect a golf course located on what should have been the spill over or flood plain. That was one of the places that came to mind. tweedsider I think the great majority of flood walls and banks pre-date the golfcourse/ hotel development at Cardrona - they mostly comprise old stone built walls originally intended to minimize flooding to agricultural land. The golf course does at times flood, and these old defences are broken in many places - just as well because I suggest the flood plain is essential - certainly from the point of view of our ground floor on the other side of the valley ! We lie within the 1 in 200 year flood risk contour. Tweedcast

Big flood on the Conwy this weekend. Walking the river today, i found a dead parr which had obviously been stranded by the receding flood waters. Only salmon I saw today, although I lost one after a lot of head shaking.
