This might not be everybody’s cup of tea (or indeed anybody’s) but I thought I’d stick it on in case there is anyone else out there with an interest in drowning maggots Yes, not the 15’ fly rod but the 15’ float rod! After the end of the Wessex salmon season (31st August) a friend and I take up the trotting rods and centre pins in search of these… …and these But we also pick up a surprising number of sea trout (they are still in season until Oct31st and float fished maggot is a legal lure here ) As you would expect in Sept/Oct some are absolute horrors, a 6lb’er from two weeks ago But some are not bad at all One thing that is odd about these maggot caught sea trout is the way they fight. They almost never fall off and they jump very little if at all, the whole fight is very subdued compared to that on a fly rod. The long rod and light line (2-4lb breaking strain) seems to take all the dash out of them, and they come to the net just as quickly. Strangely they are all hooked in the lip (on a size 14 barbless) so I don’t think they really mean to swallow the maggot, they don’t appear to be feeding as such just picking up the bait as it goes past their nose. Anyway that’s probably enough of such filthy talk, back to the flies Andy

Some nice fish there Andy.
I haven't float fished for years but I used to love it. Something mesmerising about watching a float as it trots down the river and under the overhanging tree branches where the fishies lurk. ;D
Might try it on the Dee for grayling one of these days!

I cut my fishing teeth on such fishing, principally on the R Teme, and the species so caught under the float-fished maggot/worm/waspgrub (or even small wet fly) had a similar range - dace, chub, perch, trout, grayling, with the odd barbel, seatrout, but never a salmon!
Super pictures there! My pictures of such fish from such years ago are only on hard-copy paper (wrinkles & all), and as such not so easily transferred to the modern digital unwrinkled media!
What model of Young's centre-pin is it??

The Frome really is a fantastic fishery, but I'm not sure how all the other species survive given the number of big pike.

Exerod... good to see the pictures of what you're up to down south and well done on the catches. Particularly like the photo of the fish in your hand. I've noticed when looking at your photo's there is a real clarity about them and was wondering what camera you use?
cheers

Mike it's a Purist II 4.5" Diameter. A lovely bit of kit but I'm not sure how they justify the price, there's not really anything complicated about it and you can get good multiplyers cheaper. One day I'll perfect my Wallis casting! The secret of clear pictures is to resize them to 640 pixels wide and then sharpen them before you upload them to photobucket*. It really does make a huge difference. The thingy on the forum that resizes the pictures to 640 pixels really does degrade them (the full size versions you get when you click on them are much better). Up until this weekend all the pics I've ever put up were taken with an old 4MP Canon Ixus compact, sadly it expired on Sunday when I sat on it *You can now resize and sharpen in photobucket but I don't know how well it works.
