I usually enjoy reading the letters in T&S, and was interested to see the exchange this month about Snowy, the late Tay gillie who featured in a recent article.
He sounded like a real character, did anybody know him?
I've only ever written one letter to T&S, about 30 years ago. It was published, in fact it was the first letter on the letters page.
I was living in Yorkshire at the time and fished in 3 English counties and also in Wales. In those days, you had to buy a rod licence for each different Water Authority area, so I explained about the prohibitive cost if, like me, you fished in a lot of different parts of the country. The national rod licence was brought in some time later (the 80s?), so I feel I played a small part in changing the system.
Has any other member written to T&S? If not, what would you write to them about?

Hi John, I read the letters page with great interest; it's great to see such a variety of opinions. I wrote a letter around 2 years in defence of Fishing on Sunday in Scotland. This emotive subject obviously brought out a fair few differing opinions ............. ;D ;D, as controversial subject do but I did receive 5 letters of support through T&S to my home address. I wrote the letter from a Ghillies point of view, but also that of a Christain. It appeared by the initial responses that there were a few more on the side of opening up Sunday fishing but in reality, I felt that the responses were more of a personal attack of my Christain belief than that of the real issue. I think that perhaps I'm too old fashioned but quite like it that way.............. Anyway that's my letter and lets hope we keep this thread as it was designed and not as an opportunity to follow on to the subject of our individual letters.

'Snowy' White (I never did find out his real Christian name) was a legend on the Tay having ghillied on most beats at one time or another. Snowy's knowledge of the Tay was total and covered every beat from Scone to the loch. His trade mark was a rather minging black duffle coat and matching black wellies which he wore come hail or shine - nae tweeds for this fella. I first came across him at Dalguise in the early seventies and recall that he bore a striking resemblance to legendary Scottish singer Duncan MacRae of 'Wee Cock Sparra' fame. Definitely 'old school' and a REAL character with a wicked sense of humour ...... not too keen on our American bretheren if memory serves. Greatly missed and often spoken about - even to this day. Will have to 'fork out' and buy T&S (something I have not done for donkey's) to find out whats being said. STip

Andy
There was an article about Snowy in the March T&S . Written by a German angler, funny but fairly derogatory about Snowy in parts.
If you haven't seen it, I'll do a photocopy for you.

I seem to remember Willie Gunn had one in about holding fish upside down to stop them wriggling about. Right now the very thought is sending me into room spin................................
