A nice 1.5 to 1.75lb brownie from a recent trip to the N Esk when the many stale salmon were not too interested in the very low water It took a sizeable purple shrimp tube, and was safely released after fly removal The only 'salmon' I landed for the two-day trip was around 5lb, VERY coloured, and taken on a cascade at the entry stream into Allan's, and was unhooked in the water & returned without the fuss of any photo. I did hook one of the larger residents - perhaps in the 14-16lb class, right in the gloaming (one minute after 7pm) in the Bridge stream, but after a couple of minutes of a subdued fight, it shook the hook. That's fishing, folks! Mike

South Esk brownie. Taken on a small Ally's at Finavon Castle. 2lbs approx. Note the colour and markings - very similar to Mikes troot from the Northie.

Cracking trout there S'Tip. Gordon, I was on the lowest beat - Kinnaber - Martin Stansfield's water. Very nice, enticing with all the fish showing, and some big ones, but too low & low oxygen in the water (officially measured, but not by me) probably partly due to the algae. I did ask about going back at end Oct but no spaces - unless someone pegs it! Mike

Gordon General tips would be fish very small flies, and they do seem to like both the bright red Ally's and the cascades. Surprisingly for the low water, only fish taking were on sink tips/intermed. Mike What beat were you fishing? I am on Canterland on the last week of October. Never fished the North Esk, any tips? Gordon Hi Gordon - Jimmy Sinclair is the ghillie on Canterland and a nicer guy you couldnae meet. The beat has about 15 named pools with most of the beat fished from the left bank. They have a couple of pools at the top and bottom ends that you have access to from both banks (Craigo fishings are opposite). Bonnie fly water especially the Long Bank, The Bridge Pool, Ghoile, Bothy Stream, Kinairdy, Gain Shot, Howies Stream and the Logie Pool. Jimmy has a truly stunning pencil drawing of the beat drawn directly onto the entire length of the fishing hut back wall. Difficult to find the entrance to the beat from the main road unless you have a good map (be warned). Rod's / flee's / lines ?? - just have to wait and see what the water is like on the day - a lot can change between now and the last week of the season. Regards STip PS - Gordon - just posted some Canterland pics for you on the Nth Esk board - they were taken on the run off of a higher water but at least you should get an idea of the beat.
