One part of fishing for Salmon I can claim no experience is in fishing small heavy but lightly dressed copper tubes.
I have some 0.5" copper tubes and they are pretty sparsely tied.
Just a few hair fibres top and bottom and a couple of strands of microflash with a JC nail at the side of what is often a bare tube apart from the clear or orange junction tubing. I have also seen 0.25" Tungsten used as well but these tend to use Arctic Fox.
Does anyone fish with such types of flies? If so, what type of water do you use them on and with what type of set up.
I was almost thinking about putting one on when I fished the Upper Tweed recently but the water was at 9" on the gauge so felt they would catch the bottom too easily.
I have heard they can be deadly in the right circumstances but do not have enough experience/knowledge to gauge this
Any help, most appreciated.

TB,
Flies as you describe are used all the time in Ayrshire. The 0.5" copper tube you describe sounds like the Red Devil, which is very popular and effective. A small river like the doon, which is generally deep and narrow, is suited to a small fast sinking tube as it gets down to the fish quick.
I also like the 0.25" tungsten tubes and have had quite a few fish on them from both large and small rivers. I have used these very small tubes in relatively low flows with a lot of steady handlining to keep them moving attractively and off the bottom.
The wee heavy tubes can be fished conventially across streams but also into deep slower areas where gentle tweaking by handling can work very well. I have seen this used to great effect on the Stinchar.
The 0.5" Tungsten tubes are my favourites in a small, clear water spate, again they get down to the fish quickly.
As for set up, the usual multi tip lines with a short leader. I find they turn over extremely well, and flatter your casting.

I use them mainly in low water in fast runs where there are fish lying. Trying to get in their face and annoy them! Mainly use with floating line and tip so can mend but in broader runs will use with sinking lines. Like them in red&black and orange&black and as you say with jungle cock. I use ordinary bronze trebles in 12/14 and find they get right in with no issues re strightening.

thanks for that
I will also be exploring the use of stainless Steel crimps as Tubes as I have heard these are quite good also.
Already tied up some Tungsten 13 mm Tubes and they will sink like, well, tungsten!
