Hi guy's - thought about initially putting this thread in the 'Lounge' but a lot of the stuff that we (the old lag's) might have to say on the subject can be of help to the novice IMHO. Could also be helpful in understanding the workings of a well seasoned salmon fishers brain, or lack of it, and what hacks them ..... off in a piscatorial sense.
Novices - This is very much a'personal opinion's' thread and should not be taken as the 'norm' as what one man finds irksome another might not.
As examples, here is my starter for 10 .....
Guy's who turn up late, or sometimes not at all, without even the courtesy of a phone call - a lack of communication - the worst !.
Guy's who bring dog's who have 'problems' with other dogs -usually chocolate labs in my experience.
The D&G merchant - not Dolce y Gabbana - Mr. Doom + Gloom - "Huvnae seen a fush 'a day - waste 'O money". NO !! its not a waste of money - you have paid for the privilege to fish a piece of water - in salmon fishing fish can never be guaranteed. Get used to it.
Guy's who have paid a small fortune on 'extreme conditions' clothing then complain when we get a wee bit of wind, sleet or rain (not you Robbie). I shudder to think how much complaining would be done if we never had the need for the hood's, gloves, layers etc.
People who just don't listen to advice - especially WHERE to fish (ask any ghillie). They LOOK like they are listening but they're not. Usually guy's who are trying to impress impressionable friends as having greater knowledge or experience than they actually do. Usually architects or 'money men'.
Guy's who get visibly pissed off when someone else gets into a fish or two. Rejoice for them !! - at least it proves that there are 'takers' about. Don't get hacked off - make that your incentive to crack on !! Don't get mad - get even !!
Whispering !! - yes I know - why whispering ? Unless you are fishing for night time sea trout then others will always assume that (A) - you have either shat yourself or (B) something is being said about them (quite happy to put this one down to mild self paranoia). It could be their choice of tackle, what the ghillie said, the conditions, recent catches (or lack of them) ...... whatever. Spit it out man - don't keep it to yourself - let us ALL in on it .... or if you HAVE to whisper then do a better job of hiding it !!
Guy's that 'dump' stuff at their erse in or around the fishing hut.
OK !! - I like "a tidy hoose" and would be the first to admit it but do try to avoid dumping things like picnic hampers, crates of swallie, discarded waders (does the waders no good), tackle bags etc etc in an indiscriminate manner. Create 'your' space and keep it under control ...... gonnae dae that fur me ...... gonnae ? ;D
There ye go !! - a few totally petty and anally retentive rantings - there are others but times gittin on.
Feel free to contribute gentlemen - and ladies !! - the pettier the better.
NOVICES - this is for your benefit in order that you don't make the mistakes or errors of judgment WE did or have been guilty of making in the past .... and probably still do to this day. Do with this knowledge what you will but do it wisely.
Yours aye
