My friend tells me he seen someone casting nearly 50ys on the Tay with a shooting head. Is this possible? What is the furthest a fly has been cast using this method? Thanks for any info to be received.

Scott McKenzie set a new world record in 2009 spey casting 68 yards. I think that this record has since been beaten but I am not entirely sure. Scott's casting technique is not to everybodies taste but in my view he is awesome. You can judge for yourself here he certainly defines the V loop

Thanks for any info to be received. Some of lads down at the grainhead and the muirtons on the lower Tay are very good with their shooting heads and will cast more than 50yds.

45 yards is consistently achievable with a 14'er, out the box medium length head and favourable conditions, it's not really pushing the rod if you have a balanced set up.
I fish with two guys in particular who cast that each weekend. The same anglers can almost clear a 50yard off the reel on the dtx too.

I fish the Grain off both sides pretty regularly, well prob too regularly. My heads are about 18yds and I shoot about 14-18 arm pulls of line. Each arm pull is about 54 inches, so 16 arm pulls is 864 inches/39=22yds, leader another 2yds gives 42yds on average. What about if pushed? Prob 22 arm pulls max for me, gives another 6 arm pulls on the first calc' which is another 8yds-bingo 50yds about my max. I can think of 4 (two past and two present) that can def' beat me and they're big lads who can wade further too and there are a good few that are much the same as me. I would say we're regularly fishing at 40yds plus rather than 50yds.

Whenever I try to do a really big cast with a shooting head (not close to 50 yards ;D) the fly invariably catches the head as it unfurls - but yes, long casts are much easier with a shooting head when you have sorted out how to loop and hold the backing line.

Try taking the fly off....it works for me! ;D

I often fish saltwater with the fly, open beach for bass. I use double handed rod with # 11 intermediate or sinking shooting head. 13 metre + 30 metre 50 lb Compline attached to Amnesia mono as backing. Often after casting I am left holding the black Amnesia mono, only to be well into the head on the retrieve when a bass hits the fly. Probably 30 ft out ! academic....
