In view of the current Sports Relief charitable events in aid of good causes, with the emphasis on sport-related events, I have had a thought how we, as anglers, may contribute to such a charity, putting our casting prowess to good use.
Casting a Mile....what does it mean?
1760 yards is just over 70 casts of 25 yards, and a lot less for those who can 30, or 35 or more yards!
I think it would be no mean feat to get together a group of expert, journeymen & novice casters for each individual caster to make enough casts to add up to a sponsored (for charity) mile.
For the 2013 Sports Relief event, I would be prepared to initiate and co-ordinate such an organised "Casting a Mile" event, including venue(s), personalities, casters, etc, but may need some help with promotion, sponsorship, webpages, viral messaging, international involvement etc.
What do you think?
Who's up for it??
Mike

It is indeed a great idea, you might need to up the distance a bit though most of us would cast several miles during the course of a days fishing but not many could run a mile (Butler exempt of course)

Thanks for the responses so far.... The 'Mile Casters' does not have to all undertake this at the same venue, nor necessarily on the same day. It's just that there will probably be, the plan is @ this stage, to have a few 'larger' venues or meets on "the day" close to the Sport Relief weekend, and individuals can do there own bit around that time. It would be good to have some well-known casters, ghillies, instructors, and fishermen (no names, Graham R!!) involved, all of which will raise the profile of 'the event', and encourage others to also get interested in being involved, organising, supervising, and promoting this until "the day". I would envisage this as a rolling ball downhill, gathering speed & impetus, and although we may start small, for further years, this could get big It will be important to focus on what it's about - charitable causes, national & international, worked for by like-minded fishermen to set aside some of their time for this Casting a Mile event. Apart from further integration of ALL fishermen, as casting does not just mean the fly , this kind of impetus and focus may bring more faces together for such a worthy cause. Mike

Sport Relief is a spin-off of the original Comic Relief - a UK run charity set up for raising £££ for relief of those less fortunate than ourselves, and for the UK, this means that approx 50% of funds (over £52 million in 2012) raised by the multitude of sponsored events go to good causes outside the UK, and 50% to UK causes. "Go that extra mile" was a slogan used in the 2012 'campaign', with 2 specific multi-sited event (sponsored) participants undertaking 1 mile of running/walking, or 1 mile of swimming. I worked out that with casting just 25 yards (whatever rod/line used) a mere 70 times makes up the mile (1760 yards), so I felt that, as anglers, setting aside a 'special' or extra time to Cast a Mile, with sponsorship, would have the potential to raise loadsa £££ for the Sport Relief charity, and give us extra pause for thought about those less fortunate than ourselves, us having water to fish in, rather than others even struggling for fresh clean water to drink. In terms of an international contribution, & I do realise there are many very worthy causes out there, some already being supported in the 'pages, having some N American input may well be very worthwhile. As the Sport Relief 'event day' 25th March is already over, yet charitable organisations never sleep, and really take some serious organising, I thought that perhaps setting this off now in anticipation of Casting a Mile events for 2013 would allow the idea to get a good hearing, and therefore support & action

Mike
Just a thought unlike this year the weather can be very un predictable at that time of year. So it might be better to have it going through the year at highland games and summer fates under the banner of in aid of sport aid 2013 and you could get booted and suited to present the cheque on the night. That way it gives the likes of me who work off shore a better chance of attending one of the events and also getting the public more involved with the possibility of raising more cash. I am sure the likes of Gordon castle who recently resurrected there highland games could be a venue as last year they had a casting demo.we could then get a little bit in the press just after the event and then a bigger bit at the time of sports relief when the grand total will be announced.
Just a possibility
Herbie
