I used to be an all nighter back in the 80s when the Stinchar was full of sea-trout, every now and again I do decide to fish all night but within a couple of hours without hearing app Don't worry guys this forum will survive alright, too many dedicated die hards on here to allow its demise. It will survive if each one of us introduces just one young person to our sport. I am now inducting a new keeper/Ghillie into our sport. I am having so much fun with motivating him, helping him with his training -from customer care to health & safety to chainsaw maintenance to IFM certification. We have agreed, the two of us, that his aim should be to get the experience of river management under his belt, combined with learning the ropes of ghillieing, book keeping etc so that he can manage the business of a fishery. OK I am lucky to be in a position to do that. I am also lucky in that a young man wrote an e-mail to me (and many others I suspect) and that I replied to him. That's where the story started. The outcome is ahead, still in the mists of the future. But if I were predicting the future I would say that my apprentice has the ability to become a major influence in the development of our sport for the next generation. If I can get him to where he wants to be, that will be my biggest contribution. By the way, at the age of 26 he is already a superb salmon fly fisherman. Much better than I am. He writes well, but most importantly of all, he listens! Adipose

I used to be an all nighter back in the 80s when the Stinchar was full of sea-trout, every now and again I do decide to fish all night but within a couple of hours without hearing a splash, the yawning starts and soon I'm heading home. Don't worry guys this forum will survive alright, too many dedicated die hards on here to allow its demise. SL Don't you just love the quiet nights though when they turn up trumps! A clear night and a full moon, not a fish to be heard and then bang! Yes, I really love that. Many years ago I had a night, completely alone, on the South Esk at Finavon. If you know that water you may be familiar with the Boat Pool. The river was dead low. By that I mean so low that everyone in the strath had given up night fishing. It was mid July and a blazing full moon was marching across the cloudless sky above Finavon Hill. I was fishing quietly down the pool at about one o'clock in the morning, deep wading nearly at nipple height! Sea trout were cruising and torpedoing around the pool, leaving a wake of the most alluring moon-reflecting ripples you can imagine. The setting was pure Magic. Just below the big bend at the Willows I had a deep tug and landed a sea trout of 4lbs after a colossal struggle. At times I was looking down the pool towards the Hill and, hearing a splash 50 yards upstream of me at the Willows, realised that was my fish! I thought the disturbance would put down every fish in the pool. That was not the case because, fishing the pool down towards Volcano I had three more sea trout and a grilse. The sea trout weighed 4lbs, 4lbs, 4 lbs 8oz and 6lbs. The grilse weighed 3lbs 8oz! I walked home with my load of fresh sea trout and a grilse in bright moonlight. Of course, in those far off days, we killed our fish. I am sincere when I say I wouldn't do that today. In fact they would have all gone back alive. Have we lost anything? Adipose

Bit of a bi-polarity thread this one, but continuing the sea trout line, I just love those first few minutes when the dawn chorus slowly kicks in and the light 'switch' changes from night to day break. Moments like these tend to be followed quickly by a tight draw on the line ........ Truly magical.
Have we "lost anything" ? Yes, there were far more fish around then ...... ?

Yes and not just salmon and sea troot. Look at the dearth of trout, lampreys, eels, minnows and even Grayling to a large degree. Yet some produce graphs that depict salmon returning in their droves. I personally don't see it myself.

Had a walk along part of my local trout stream, watching a shoal of 50 or so Salmon Parr drifting down the stream, also saw an eel plus a couple Ospreys flying up the valley. Swallows, Sand Martins and House Martins hawking insects near the old mill, only needed a Cuckoo and a rod in my hand to complete the picture.

Last year stood at the mouth of the May burn watching the swallows hunting flies and there were clouds of midges all over. Nothing unusual in that except that there was a large flock of pink feet feeding amongst the snow. Bob

Strange that so many members fished Phones and Knockando the other week yet no reports - is it all worthwhile I ask myself.

Apologies if I appeared critical - just very interested as to how the week went. Fished with Dave's party 4 years ago and notwithstanding severe arthritis in my knee, a bout of diverticulitis(necessitating a trip to the doc's) still fell in love with the place.
