Having had lot's of emails from vista print and the like for personalised calendars I thought it might be an idea to create a forum calendar for 2016 by having fishing related photos submitted between now and say early October then have a pole of the photos for the forum to decide what ones to include and for what month. Then possible see who all would like to purchase a calendar at a price that covers the cost along with posting and a little extra that can be donated to a good habitat project or the likes on one river of the forum's choosing. If the members think this is a good idea I might need a little help in the organizing of it as I am very nearly on the other side of the world half the year.

Excellent idea Herbie - and thanks to Rob for offering his support. I'm sure we would all get right behind this. Do you see this as each month's pic reflecting the general 'feel' of that particular month ?
Apart from decent photography, and there are a few decent photographers within our membership, it would be good to supply a bit of blurb with each pic ie. if its a fish pic then possible details of the fly or whatever. If it's a bridge pic - a bit of history about the bridge ...... sort of thing.
I'm sure techno savvy members like Tweedcast could provide valuable input - nice fish off Cardrona last week Malcolm. Me ? - I can look at 'stuff' and tell if it's conforms to the definition of 'fine design' due to my finely tuned eye and compositional prowess.
How about you and Rob firm up on how this might pan out ?
Once again, superb idea.

Rob Thanks Rob Andy As for layout the more input from forum members the better as it will be a forum calendar but I do like your idea of the blurb about the photo and if there are any members that has connections with a company that can give a good deal on printing the calendar would be appreciated. Once we get an idea of cost then we can put it to the forum to set the price they are willing to pay.

Just a thought ......... if we are going for a 2016 calendar we really need to have this in place no later than November 2015. IF we are aligning each month with a picture that 'sum's up' that particular month we will have to start taking / collecting the shots we might use for November + December now. Due to this being the last day of the month we might have to 'dummy' up a November series of shots. January to October should be straight forward.
Mind you, we dont have to align shots to specific months but it seems logical to do this. We also dont have to wait til next year to take 'new' pics - we could, I suppose, use imagery that we / you have have already taken.
Like I say, just thoughts at this stage.

Quite willing to help where I can. I suggest Bryan might want to co-ordinate a mock up - might even come together before Christmas and have a few printed for those that want as a dummy run for next year.

This is just a few examples I know it's not the best example but gives the Idea but I tend to like the bottom left one as we could have a scenic and possibly fish and equipment

They all look like possibilities H. Is that 3 pics we are allowed on a page or are we able to play around with the layout, sizes and amounts of pics etc - or are we governed by a standard layout ? I imagined something like this : A3 portrait format. Landscape is OK but I think portrait is better for a calendar - just my opinion. Cover - the forum banner or logo plus the web address plus thumbnails of all 12 shots Inserts (months) - each page contains a main pic (as large as possible) plus an additional small pic (if we are alowed more than one at no additional cost) plus a small block of supporting text, plus the forum web address, plus the calendar bit of it obviously. I dont think it's essential to have fish shots continuously throughout. However, if we were to do this arent their some of the Cornwall / Devon rivers fish into December ? We could probably plunder our current stock of members pics (with approval of course) and get a fair few or at least some strong contenders - OR we could just go for a completely new set of shots and run it like the old 'pic of the month' feature we used to do. Just thoughts.

Just thoughts. Andy It is up to the forum how it looks but the more input from other members the better and if they know of printing shops that can do calendars they could put on designs. No it dose not have to have fish on it but we should only accept ones that have been carefully handled and returned to continue it's journey. The other thought I had was if we were to possible approach independent service ,tackle ,guide, instructor or accommodation to sponsor a month to try and cover the cost of producing the calendar so that more money can be put to a good river project and in return we featuring a photo and contact details of that sponsor on that month. I don't know about the other members but I think the project should be on one of the smaller rivers as that is where I believe a lot of us started fishing on and developed the love of salmon fishing. Yes we can use previously posted photos but I would like to think this can also generate some new photos and input to the forum So if any of the rest of our forum members have contacts to printing shops that can do calendars feel free to put a photo of the designs they can do on this thread and please contribute so as to generate the best calendar possible.

Great idea to donate any profits towards a 'smaller' river project.
Great idea also to get page sponsorship in order to generate production costs. Might not have to be 12 different companies, businesses or individuals we need to think about. It could be one 'company' sponsors the whole thing ................ or 'they' can decide to sponsor 2 or three months.
Had a close look at the examples you flagged up and they are 'portrait format' - not A3 but that's no biggie as they are still attractively proportioned rectangles.
As you say, lets see if any other members have 'connections' with either print companies producing template style calendars, print companies in general, and people who know their way around Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign.
Early days.

Great idea. I've had calendars made for grandparents with family pics by vista print or bonusprint in the past and it was easy to do. Just upload a few pics to their website and Bob's your uncle. You can add entries to specific dates like the opening/closing days on different rivers, Andy's birthday etc too quite easily. I would suggest finding out what the minimum resolution for digital photos is, as once you enlarge to A4 or bigger pics that look good on screen sometimes get dodgy. If you need fishy pics, I'll struggle to contribute Blank days I can do.

The minimum image resolution Apple suggest for image printing is 180dpi - the ideal is 300dpi. Whether a given image achieves this depends on the output printed size.

This is a photobucket test Calendar - tall format as per Herbie's original suggestion. You can have one image, or three, but not a mixture from this website. Nice layout One line of text below image(s) - not shown on this sample. Photobucket is very clunky to use and does not let you save your calendar - one shot, any mistakes or wander from the webpage and you start from scratch. The rest of the test pages can be seen here Photobucket Test Calendar

This is a PHOTOBOX test calendar; By coincidence I was given a Photobox A3 portrait calendar on Friday - very impressed with the quality of paper and printing. Web interface is quite a lot easier to use than Photobucket. UK base for website so printing in UK I assume. Each page can be formatted with one two three or four images. One line of description text per page (The red box) Smillies or sads indicate if image resolution is sufficient for printing. The full set can be viewed here ; s230.photobucket.com/user/MalcMcLeman/slideshow/PhotoboxTestCalendar
