I note that some sea trout are being reported already on the Esks, some one had 5 finnock up to a pound from the Pow mouth beat on Kinnaird, now that is not the best beat on the river, so there must be a few around.

Hi B. It's certainly not the best beat on the So Esk, as you say, but it's the furthest down and therefore affected by tides. As finnock tend to favour the lower beats this does not surprise me. Probably just moving into and out of The Montrose 'Basin' on each tide.

I've been thinking of having a visit to the House of Dun water, anyone fished it recently?

8 fish from Canterland to 4 pounds yesterday, hill walking tomorrow, must get a rod out in the coming week, still not wet a line in fresh water yet.

A few trout showing along the South Esk, I am fishing on Saturday, will start at 06.00 with a single handed rod for the Sea trout, fish the pools down, sunshine forecast, so go for the Salmon later with the double hander. Usually fish till about 11.00, go home for some lunch and a rest, then back in the evening till midnight after a trout again

I would start at 6am (IF it's not too cold) and fish for salmon all day - you might pick up a sea trout into the bargain. Leave targeting the sea trout til the last 90mins of the day. Just my opinion. Which of the Kinnaird beats are you fishing ?

Cheers Andy for your advice, I am fishing the lower beat, I have fished this beat several times before and know a little about some of the usual lies.

I'll be at the opposite end of the river - remember to let some through ! Good luck.
PS. If you are targeting the sea trout then try a tandem lure or perhaps a Muddler of some description. I wouldnt go to wee Stoats Tail doubles just yet.

I'm out for the first time tomorrow night. Already 2 off the beat earlier in the week. Still quite cold after dark, but the warmer daytime air should make the first hour or so interesting. 1 inch aluminum tube followed by a muddler. Can't wait.

An enjoyable night even if it was blank. Just one decent pull to a stripped muddler. A very good head of fish, with shoals of sea trout in all the usual spots. Some big ones judging by the surface activity at dusk. Sadly a fair number carrying evidence of disease as has been the evidence in other SW sea trout rivers.

We had a decent spate early last week which I hoped would freshen things up a bit. I went out Saturday night but called it a night before midnight. Freezing cold! Little wonder there was little or no surface activity and no takers. I will catch up on my sleep for a week or two until summer is here for sure.

Forty seven Sea Trout in three days from the Esks with the best 7lbs from the Gallery beat, Neil is obviously having a ball on there, South Esk getting plenty too. Looks like Tony's syndicate on Finavon are also doing well I think.
