Looking at the number of small grilse 3-5 lbs. I was wondering if they were getting to be the standard size in place of the usual 5-8 lbs. we used to get. What do others think. Bob

3-5lbs has been normal here for 10+ years. I have been reading reports from various lower Tay beats over the last three weeks commenting on the numbers of 2-4lb grilse that are running!

15 years ago in the Westcountry 3 - 5lb was pretty standard too but prior to that they were bigger. The chalkstream ones seemed to be generally a bit bigger - but still smaller than they were. The grilse here in Uist are so small you can't even see them!

One from the Dee a few weeks ago, it would have been barely 1lb in weight.

Small grilse have been the norm for many years. This year at least, following a serious decline in numbers of grilse there have been generally bigger numbers and some of them have been pretty healthy specimens. I suppose it is all down to where they go to feed at sea and how plentiful is the food supply.

Had a couple of small Grilse earlier too, and lost a few smaller ones which seemed to be around the 3-5lb mark. But does anyone think the salmon are a good size this year in general. Looking at posted pictures and the Fish pal sites, they do seem to be in good condition and decent weights kicking about.

3 - 5 lb seems about the norm on Tweed, also seen them as small as 1lb.

Weighed one last year that was only 14 oz. Can not make my mind up wither to return them or kill them. Trying to breed bigger livestock one would not normally used small specimens. Bob

Out yesterday and for about an hour there was fish showing all over the pool from some that would be lucky to make a couple of lbs. to others that were massive. Bob

I tried to track you down, last time I was on the Island but failed miserably. ☺ Hope the fishings going well for you. Atb Eric

3-5lbs has been the norm for a while on many North West rivers.
