Just back home today having completed a 600 mile round trip in the company of sinkingtip down to the beautiful River Stinchar in Ayrshire for the Forum meet which was organised with great precision by stincharlad on the stunning Knockdolian beats of the river. It simply would not have been possible to pick a better day for the meet and all those that made the trip cannot fail to be impressed by the river which presented itself in perfect order. Some were concerned that dunkeld might have been up to his usual tricks and to some extent it was touch and go whether we would hit the river absolutely right, as the river was up to 5ft on Wednesday night and as there was very heavy rain on the Thursday afternoon, but we did, with a dropping river running at 2ft 6inches at Colmonell where we met up at 8.15 on Saturday morning ( those of us that were on time) and where beat lots were drawn by the organiser. Sinkingtip and myself had travelled down on Friday ( it took me 9 hours to drive there via Dundee where I picked up sinkingtip) and Gordon had arranged a couple of hours on Friday evening on one of the beats where I was fortunate enough to land a very nice 12 pounder and also lost a couple of fish. Sinkingtip also had a hold of one. Stincharlad recorded the fight on gopro so hopefully the video might appear here soon. Beats allocated, the nine rods set off on Saturday for the river. Six fish were landed during the course of the day including a 14 and 15 pounder and probably twice or three times as many hooked or pulled. Most of the action was in the morning as the river started rising just after midday and did not start to drop until about 6pm. I don't want to say who was the top rod but suffice to say I landed 3 and lost 4 during Saturday morning. Howfordst was not far behind. I have added a weblink below to the photos that I took during the course of the day. I hope that you are able to see them and get a flavour for the kind of fishing that we experienced and some of the delightful pools on offer. Sinkingtip was freely sharing out a certain fly tied by allyshrimp which proved to be a very successful pattern on the day. I hear allyshrimp is taking orders now although production costs and selling prices seem to be rising fast. Stincharlad is to be congratulated for all his hard work and although it was disappointing that only 5 forum members and one lapsed member attended and there were a few late call offs it was nonetheless a highly successful meet. No doubt individual attendees will add their own comments and photos of the day. Devronmac www.dropbox.com/sh/rz5ytxtfy7otew9/AAAlT69lYT5_INFtl-a4i34Pa?dl=0

It was a pleasure to have you all down here......... now you all know how I spend my evenings I have to say I was delighted " my wee gem" allowed the guys to sample some of her delights. How the hell we managed to get a water like that when the date was set in the spring is beyond me. It was the best water we have had all season. The reason I picked the date was because the Colmonell Agricultural Show is on that day and I seem to recall driving past the show with the rod on the clips on many occasions. Mel, Andy and I had a wee head start on the fri night on Dalni and Scaur and it was just magic.......... with a 12, 10 and 8lb with another 3 lost. Sat morning saw the gauge at 2ft 6in at the bridge....perfect. beats drawn and away we went. Mr Mel Mc Donald drew the very top beat along with Andy and he simply had the time of his life as he landed fish of 8...14 and then one of 10lb Poor Andy had two on but failed to get them to the bank. Mel also had a few on which were for none of it. Once I had everyone sorted I joined Kenny Carr down in the Scaur, but despite seeing plenty fish they were on the move and didn't want to play Gordon Mc Dermid and Jim Smillie were on the bottom pools where they lost one and got one We gathered for lunch then switched round the beats then the water lifted a few inches after the early morning rain things were a lot quieter until it settled then Gordon Mc D got a 15 and a 5lb from Maggie's to end a very enjoyable day. I lost my Glasses which were in a case if anyone seen it and when looking for them this morning I have found a gye net with a leather sling. Let me know who it belongs to and I will sort it out. Great day guys and well done to all who attended and you know where I am if you want to do it again. SL

Well done Mel - those that cancelled are probably kicking themselves. I really think the Stinchar valley is a wonderful place to be and with 3ft on the gauge at Colmonell as good as anywhere that I have fished. Weighed and paid for our regular Autumn trip

Great day out on a river I haven't fished before and met some great guys into the bargain. Thanks must go to Gordon for organising and being very helpful in showing us the beat/pools. Good turn out and the weather was in the main very good for fishing. Mel did good and showed us how to fish a strange river - well done again master!! Below are just a few pictures of the day.

Just to add my tuppence worth.
The evening / day was just a catalogue of pulls, plucks and fish lost - by "lost" I mean at the net. Good to fish new water and rekindle acquaintances.
The river was in good ply and although there weren't many fish showing, they were clearly there. Had all fish hooked been landed we would have easily been into double figures.
A lovely river and an extremely well kept beat - well done Gordon. I would go back in a minute.
Awards :
Flee of the day - Bill Cook's HP Shrimp. Successful on more than one occasion. Currently fetching huge prices on E-bay.
Star of the Day (joint winner's) - Gordon Hyslop for getting everybody where they should be and Kenny Carr for the catering. I thought it was spit roast hog where in actual fact it was square sausage.
Top Rod - Mel 'Donner' McDonald. His right arm biceps are now twice the size of his left.
Downer of the Day - me going to net a fish for Mel, slipping and, as I write, probably nursing a broken ankle. Doctors tomorrow methinks.
I'll post a couple od pics in due course.

Och I was going to take the Hog too, but thought the sassssages and bacon would be quicker as we wanted to get back onto the water quickly.
As for losing fish! hard lines Andy, I lost two between 11:45 and 12:00 but not near netting, more like long distance Catch and Release.
Can I no count them as they would be going back in any case lol

Not sure that I like the 'Donner' part of my name. Andy introduced me to some 'fine dining' experiences including the Kebab place in Girvan which we only chose because the fish and chip shop had just closed when we got there rather late on Friday evening. On Saturday night we tried unsuccessfully to get a bar meal at the Kings Arms in Ballantrae but they took one look at Andy in his track suit and decided that we were not the right 'clientele' to be served food. Perhaps the fact that they had a big party of 'Ballantrae Smugglers' all suitably attired in 1700s nautical gear had something to do with it? We settled for a half pint of Guinness( Andy was buying) and a bag of crisps and nuts but later managed to catch the chip shop in Girvan. However I must thank sinkingtip( a.k.a. Andy Cottonbud)) most sincerely for netting my best fish after going "'a' over 't'" in truly spectacular style on a pile of rocks as he rushed down the bank to help me in what was really quite a tight and tricky spot. He was clearly in a lot of pain and discomfort whilst netting the fish and for the rest of the day and I was dreading helping him out of his recently sealed 'Diver Dave' waders which had proved a bit sticky to get off the previous evening. Perhaps this exercise is what weakened your ankle in the first place Andy? I sincerely hope the injury it is not as bad as it sounds. Thanks also to Kenny for saving me from having to buy lunch by producing fantastic lorne sausage and bacon rolls cooked on his quality £20 stove on the back of his vehicle.....with brown sauce as well ! This was a classic example of proboards camraderie and hospitality and the craic was also great helped by moderately generous helpings (in very small glasses) of Andy's sloe gin........which went down a treat...very smoooooooth. To cap it all I managed to increase my season's Scottish catch by 400% in 24 hours....and well done Bill for tying that Highland Park Shrimp...a wee cracker of a flee !
Rumour has it that stincharlad was down at the river again on Sunday retrieving the one I lost in the tree at the neck of Corbie Stairs !
Waiting with great anticipation to see the gopro video that stincharlad took on Friday evening of yours truly landing a 12 pounder( just remember Gordon to edit out the 'failed' landing attempts) !
Like dunkeld I would go back in a flash despite the long drive. This was a nostalgic trip for me having caught my very first salmon on the Balnowlart beat of the Stinchar in August 1963....but that is another story.
