Wondering if the categories for the various rivers will change in time. My river the Earn [Perthshire] has been classified as a class 3 so all fish to go back although the sea trout are still allowed home. It is obvious that there is a lot less fishing being carried out so what happens when the catches get even less. Will there come a time in the near future when salmon fishing is stopped. Considering that my best fish last season were caught on the trout rod who is going to check up. No smoked salmon for Christmas's. Bob

Bob that is going to be tough especially if the river is primarily angling club water as being class 3 then a lot of older members will not renew membership if they can't keep there catch. The 2 association's that I am member of there are a lot of members that don't declare there full catch as the levies to the board will increase if they did and in turn the ticket price would have to increase to cover costs. The elgin association could not have declared accurate figures as between my self and Peter we declared 8 fish caught and returned however the total declared catch for the whole of the Lossie as 19 salmon/grilse and 19 seatrout. Given elgin association had around 79 members last year and we had just under half declared salmon/grilse then you can see the problem with using rod catches to base classification as you rely on people's honesty. I can only see two ways to get the grading changed best being having a fish counter installed to show a more accurate gauge of the run size or get every one to fish and declare everything they they catch and return everything but that would take several years by that time the club will most likely be closed.

Have tried in the past to get a fish counter but get told the cost would be to great and in a spate some fish might get passed. If it misses some fish each season it would still give a reasonable count on average over the seasons. I read in another forum a member who fishes a river near mine who was boasting about only declaring 5% of the total catch to keep costs down. This to me seams to be a major problem with society today. Easier to say something negative than get off ones backside and do something. Bob
