We have a Cortachy day coming up - might try to get a couple of bottles for luck. Nice packaging.

Sheds and sloe gin are two of the few things actually worth getting excited about. I got my first when I was 16 for my birthday, and I couldn't have been happier because I'd rather outgrown my small bedroom. We have two sheds at home, one full of gardening equipment and the other a playhouse/den for the kids (my elder daughter, now 9 years old, has stated that she never wants to leave home, and when she gets married her husband will live in that shed). However, the garage is mine - and the den will be too when the kids grow up unless the son-in-law moves in. If we had more room in the garden there would be a third shed, kitted out with a small woodburning stove. In the meantime, the garage will do me. As for the sloes, has anyone else noticed how many there are this year? My usual spot was the best I'd ever seen it, and I picked 5lb in no time at all.

An excellent crop this year at my usual spot Doug. However, I read in the paper the other day that the sloe season for most of the rest of the UK has been extremely poor due to some sort of 'blight'. Dundee Courier Farming section earlier this week.

Will get round to picking a few pounds this or next weekend, although might need a spell in the freezer to sort them out.

I froze my sloes (if you wait until the first frosts you may wait all winter, and usually round here all the fruit is picked by the first frosts anyway), and now have 2l. of sloe gin steeping in a demijohn. Should be enough for a wee while....

When I decide to 'bottle up' - whenever I get around to buying the gin - I partly defrost the berries before going over them quickly but firmly with a rolling pin just to break a few more bits of skin. Ideally, do this between a couple of sheets of tinfoil as fabric will soak up valuable juices. I was fishing with Rob Mason at Catholes on Tay on Wednesday and Upper Careston on the South Esk yesterday. Very disappointing so nothing to get excited about. However, I will post a few pics in due course. For info.
