There is an interesting feature on the Cassley in The Salmon Rivers of Scotland by Mills and Graesser -I have a signed first edition from 1981- which illustrates with excellent detail the effect of water temperature on the ascent of salmon up this turbulent section of the river.
The Pulpit is the rocky outcrop to the right of the main falls in the second photo. The first photo shows the section of the river in the diagram down to the Cemetery Pool in the distance.
My father fished the beat for about 10 years from around 1977. They always took the first week in July and killed in excess of 100 salmon between 4 rods. No C&R in those days. They even had their own deep freeze in the village! Graesser held court in the hotel bar at night (and book signings it would seem as well) but the gillies taught them how to extract fish from the Pulpit
I tried to interest the old man in a return, and did have the offer of a late August week, but I think wisely after a gap of 30 years he reckoned it would not live up to the halcyon days.
When fishing the Alness in the summer I took a little time out to pay a visit. Despite drought conditions in Easter Ross, Sutherland had no such water shortage!.
