I am self taught from the Michael Evans vol1 video, which was a great help. Do any of the more recent DVDs improve on this video? What is the Ally Gowans video like?

contin,
personally I wouldnt touch the Ally Gowans DVD - waste of money. I didnt find the instruction/his way of explaining was good at all. All personal opinion but for not much more ££ you can get 1-1 instruction from an instructor or ghillir for an hour or so - money much better spent

I haven't seen the Michael Evans one myself, but I can highly recommend the Rio DVD's 'Modern Spey Casting' and 'International Spey Casting' with Simon Gawesworth and a host of other international experts.
Also, Lani Waller's 'Steelhead Legacy', and 'The Art of Spey Casting' are worth a look.
Pure instructional set from Jeff Putnam "Speycasting" vols 1-3 set - also superb,
as is Dec Hogan's 'Modern Spey Casting and more'
I would agree that it may be very useful to have a couple of hours 1 to 1 instruction on the river with a qualified instructor.
Hope that helps, and all the best for you salmon fly fishing in '08

Mike I like the first RIO DVD 'International Spey Casting' better than the second RIO DVD but I would still recommend people buy both. Simon Gawesworth has a simple way of explaining the basic principles as well as the application. My recommendation would also be to get a few hours instruction as a starter. Then watch the video and get some practice in. salmo

The Rio DVD is very nice. No1 I have in tape and this has great fishing shots in Russia and some Scandinavian style with Leif Stavmo. Rio No2 I have in DVD version and it is also good but I found it a bit long winded with all the stick men but thorough.

Henrik Mortensens DVDs are great for learning about fishing as well as casting. Some good tips and some fantastic fish are caught.
