A few photo’s of my trip to Alaska a few years ago. Sorry for the quality of the photo's, they are scanned from photographs (before digital cameras). The tent camp where we stayed the first week nestled in the trees. The view looking up river towards Mount Illiamna. A c0ck chum salmon. A pink or humpback salmon. The black line you can just make out in the water, extending upstream around the bend in the river for 400 yards is a shoal of salmon. A Dolly Varden Charr. Bear repeller on back. ;D Accommodation for the second week. A Silver salmon or Coho. Oi, I was here first. This is my pool. The transportation. It really is a wilderness out there.

Had a great time, the scenery was spectacular and the people were very nice. It was a novelty to catch so many fish for a few days but really became a bit too easy. I prefer a bit of a challenge. I am glad I went and would recommend everyone to try it once, but if I have another big trip, I would try something a bit more challenging.

Graham,
I can thoroughly recommend fishing for Kings over there. Much harder to catch and much more exciting.

Spoke to a guy just last week who was posted over there for 3 years. He said basically the same, that the Kings were the ones to go for. Maybe some day.

Good god GR, you are a fit young man!
Based upon the mini picture shown next to your posts I thought you were a chunky chap in your sixties. Perhaps you should revise your picture as it must have been artificially squashed by the computer.

I think the avatar function squashes the picture a little. The avatar picture is a fish from the Findhorn off one of the gorge beats, so I was certainly a bit knackered after scrambling up and down the rock faces all day.

A much clearer picture. I can see why you took a photo with the fish, a lovely salmon.

Cracking Findhorn fish there, Graham. Well worth all the scree scrambling then! Mike PS, you can reset the avatar pixel dimensions within your profile so that you have a properly proportioned picture, even if the original was portrait or landscape view. M

Nice photos Graham, something completely different.
I presume you did not speak to the bears about fly tying ? I heard they hand tye their flies because they have a vice like grip.

I am planning a trip to Alaska next summer for Kings. So that would be around about the last 2 couple of weeks in June and 1st week in July. A full week or 10 days.
If anyone is interested in joining give me feedback. In the next couple of months I can post rough prices.

Fishing method would be mostly fly but in some rivers you have to use boat methods like harling or trotting deep with monofil and weighted flies or ledgered flies.
I will post some river examples later!

I was thinking of going to russia but prices seem very high. Some of my norwegian friends have had good fishing on kodiak island and sharing the beat with grizzly bears which sounds cool.
I too would be interested in more details but I heard somewhere that 2008 fishing has not been as good.

I too would be interested in more details but I heard somewhere that 2008 fishing has not been as good. alta The prices for Russian fishing has doubled in just over 3 years, making it not a practical proposition for fishing in the best weeks for all but those with very large wallets! However, the prices for fishing in Canada, the Pacific NorthWest (PNW), and Alaska is such that you could now get 2 or even 3 weeks of fishing (including travel, lodge, guides, incidentals) for the price of one Russian week. Pick the right time of year to go for the waters you wish to fish, and you will not be disappointed with the North American/Canadian experience. Alaskan experience - I have none, but this will be remedied in the not too distant future! Mike

I'm off to Alaska this August, but have no idea of the kind of tackle and flys I will need.some heads up would be great,so if I need to,I can start to pick up some tackle now ,saving me from buying it all at once and stop her indoors taking a fit
