Many thanks guys for the welcome, will try and add a few posts from an Irish perspective from time to time. Will also look into how to upload a few photos (on dial-up so not sure how effective it will be) as I would love to hear any comments on choice of patterns or style. Again, welcome aboard the '74 For a guide to uploading pictures, look here: salmo.proboards74.com/index.cgi?board=flytyingstepbystep&action=display&thread=1022Look forward to some more Irish tales & adventures Mike

Hi! My name is Brian I'm from Hilton New York. I fish King salmon, Coho salmon and Atlantic salmon in Lake Ontario. I fish them in the rivers with the fly rod and spey rod and from the boat.

Hi Brian Welcome! Are those Atlantics the ones that were artificially stocked into the Lake Ontario and that "migrate" from lake to river to spawn? I think I saw something about them on the TV the other day.

The Atlantics are stocked. The stocking program for Atlantics is very poor. The survival rate and river return rate is very low. If you catch one, it's like hitting the lottery. The Canadian side of the lake is going to stock more Atlantics. We will see how that works out. I have caught 6 in the last 11 years.

Welcome Brian, I lived in Alaska for 6 years and cut my teeth on King Salmon and it was there I learned that flies can out fish the spinner any day of the week and especially when the fish are spooked! Try telling young folk today and they just will not believe you ;D ;D ;D ;D(Yorkshiremen Sketch, Monty Python) ;D ;D salmo

Checked out the step by step instructions Mike, many thanks, will give it a go tomorrow or Wednesday, will try and keep an Irish slant on the pics. All quiet here on the fishing front, still awaiting the main grilse run which I believe is heading down around the west coast at the moment. It used to be the case that a couple of weeks after the drift nets off the west coast were picking them up in large numbers that we could expect the remnants of the run to arrive here. Now thankfully all they have to contend with here is the odd poacher, low water and the occasional monstrosity from my fly box!!

Brian I assume the Atlantics regard the lake as their "Ocean" due to its size What do you think they feed on whilst there to achieve any size ?. The lake must be very rich in life regards Robbie

The Altlantics in Lake Ontario feed on alewives, smelt and other various minnows in the lake. The state record is 24lbs. As for Lake Ontario being rich of life, the lake is struggling from the introduction of Zebra muscles, Quagga muscles and the round goby. These exotic species came to Lake Ontario (and all the other Great lakes) in the ballast water of ships from Europe. The bait populations are way down and the size of all of the salmonoids is falling. Lake Ontario is still producing the biggest salmon of all the Great Lakes. 35 - 40 lb. King salmon are still caught every fall.

Hi Alan, Your father is a real gent and one of the most respected Ghillies on the river. He has a cracking beat down there but is a great guy as he still leaves plenty in the river to swim up past. Hopefully see you on the river one day, Tight Lines and a warm welcome Jock Royan Welcome too Jim - Balvenie and a double hander - a great combination, especially if the Balvenie's a double too............
