I was on the Tay last week and was told to try spinning with a "double toby" Can someone tell me what this is as I am not sure if it simply two toby's glued together? If so what sort of weight do you use?
Thanks for the help.

This was demonstrated to me with two identical tobys laid side by side and fastened together with two slightly larger split rings. The have a hole at each end, so no glue needed, just larger split rings.
Thus a 28gms Toby becomes a 56 gms Toby

used a lot in Norway to get down in those deep fast pools, two 30 grm, toby;s joined together as MR suggests. you need sturdy equipment though for this type of fishing..

MR, For the Tay 2 x 18gram Abu tobys are best where the pools are deep or fast flowing. You can use the same colour or mix silver and copper for example. Don't glue them together as they are murder to get apart. Expensive bait to loose if you snag up.

18 gm Toby's fit together best. The 20's + 28's become a little too 'thick' for my liking and you would need a fairly heavy duty and bulky split ring to link them. On a slightly different note, I thought when I first read this thread that it was referring to the joining of two Toby's length wise - a method which I have seen used to good effect on the vast swathes of the Lower Tay - mainly around grilse time and not for many years I hasten to add. Method : You will require 2 Abu Toby's - preferably 'silver'. Lay them out top to toe on a linen dishtowel or similar (Egyptian cotton will suffice). Remove the hooks from the upmost lure and the swivel and split ring form the lower. Join both together in the 'middle' with the remaining single split ring. Tie the creation on to a well stappit fixed spool reel (and rod) containing nylon in the 12/15lb range. Find a fast, streamy bit of water which looks like it might hold fish - having first checked that there is no one fishing immediately upstream of you !!. Cast towards 45 and upstream of 45 degrees - as far you can - assuming that upstream spinning is allowed of course. 'Fan' out the pool (vary the upstream angles between casts) as you steadily work back upstream. On 'touchdown' engage the bale arm and reel back like buggery........ make sure you drag is set properly ...... and wait for it. Apart from the obvious advantage of gaining distance from the combined weights of both lures, the 'tandem' construction offers the added advantage of creating articulation between both lures due to the 'link' split ring ............ apparently, although it is a heinous practice to which I have never subscribed myself. STip ps - Always remove the overly large treble hook which generally come as standard on all Toby's and replace with something smaller - a double or even a single hook works just as well.

The only way to get the good old copper/silver combo since Abu have stopped doing it and still cheaper than potentially losing a now hens teeth and v expensive on eBay - heavier Toby Salmo!!

Alas there is no "old doll" unless you mean my mum But the old hoodie might just work - thanks for the tip stip. I enjoy the vernacular in your responses its so "oldy worldy" it kind of reminds me of the DC publications of the Broons, Oor Wullie or the Scots Magazine. Living in Perth for the summer and now moving to Dundee has switched me on to this - the banter is brilliant. Cheers MR

(by the way tippie I still havent got yon pink dooda yet. 197 by my reckoning, he "lost" a few years during the Crimean war, apparently due to a spying mission (involving highly trained pigeons and a bottle of absinthe) gone wrong. And with regard to the pink doodas, I have a boxfull here just waiting for the courier.
