about 2 bloody mm in London last night and all the airports shut this morning with big backlogs all day - been in City Airport 3 hours and 3 hours still to go for new departure time - deep joy! will be lucky to get home as there is a curfew on flights at some point here...
London - "We can afford the Olympics ((NOT)) but we cant afford any gritters or salt to keep the infrastructure running" **ckwits!

Now, that is proper snow, not the wee dusting of the stuff we get over here which seems to get everything grinding to a halt.

It only took a couple of hours Snow early this morning John, to bring Aberdeen to a grinding halt. Listening to the radio this morning on my way to work, all the talk was of the new By-Pass and its estimated cost of £295 - £395 million, yet they can't afford to buy salt for the Gritter Lorry's. No wonder the place comes to a stand still.

I saw the chaos on the news Bill - in Aberdeen and the south east.
Somebody on the radio was saying that in his part of the country, the best gritted and snow cleared roads were those maintained by local farmers, who are contracted to do it by the Council.

Thats true John. There are just not equipped to deal with the merest of snow falls in Aberdeen. It has to be said though, that in the country areas it is in the Farmers interest to keep the roads clear. They would in all probability do the job anyway, but are now being payed for it at the same time. ;D

6" of snow brought N Wales to a grinding halt last night. The main A55 trunk road was gridlocked - a 20 minute journey home from work took me 3 hours. Worst I heard was someone took 5 hours to travel 12 miles. I had to go to an early morning meeting in Wrexham, about 40 miles from where I live. The A55 was clear of snow and there was virtually no other traffic out. Looks like Scotland has had it much worse, with -20C temperatures forecast for the Highlands tonight. I don't think opening day on the Helmsdale will be too busy this year.

It doesn't seem as though there is going to be any great thaw over the next few days. I was up in H today for a look around and I didn't even bother trying to get out of the village onto the Strath Road: I didn't know where I would be able to get turned around to get back in. It also seems much of the the river is iced up at the moment. (what I was told). Living in hope.... hf
