Has anyone fished this river for its monster sea trout. I would love to go one day, and are trying to get an idea of how much it cost for the fishing and lodging. Thanks Dan

Got back on Monday from a week on the Rio Grande. A split week giving you 3 days at Toon Ken Lodge on the Upper River and 3 days on the Lower River at Villa Maria Lodge. Fantastic experience. The country, guides, food, accomodation and importantly, the fishing all excellent. I filled my boots with seatrout up to 20lbs. One interesting thing. There was one single handed rodder in the party. A young American standing 6'6" tall who was fishing with his Father. Despite our encouragement he refused to pick up a double hander which was tough for him considering the water(cold) was up and the winds we had to contend with. He admitted that he couldn't do much in some of the larger pools where he couldn't reach the fish (the pools where I did best) but if he could find narrow channels, necks etc where he could wade to the fish then he capitalised with the singlehander. In one remarkable day he took two fish of 23lb & 27lb. Somegoing on an 8 weight ! THE VIEW FROM TOON KEN LODGE INCREDIBLE DEPTH TO THESE FISH. THIS ONE TIPPED THE MACLEAN WEIGH NET AT 15LB A TWENTY POUND MALE THAT REALLY PULLED THE STRING LANDSCAPE THERE WAS ALSO A CLASS OF SMALLER VERY FRESH FISH THIS NICE FISH TOOK IN THE DARK & FOUGHT BRILLIANTLY

Lovely to see those smiling pictures again, Jim. You to have made your mark on another great part of the game fly fishing world with those stunning fish. Scottish beat owners & all ghillies please note the superb looking landing nets used to handle these fish - could do with a few on our banks ! Mike

As an ardent sea trout fisher myself, a couple of questions ...... Fishing throughout the night - or daylight / dusk only ? What kind of flee's ? Did they 'behave' like real sea troots ? yours aye STip

As an ardent sea trout fisher myself, a couple of questions ...... Fishing throughout the night - or daylight / dusk only ? What kind of flee's ? Did they 'behave' like real sea troots ? yours aye STip Thanks Andy. Admitted...my boots were overflowing Daylight/dusk only I am afraid. They fish 2 sessions in the day. You leave the lodge after breakfast and fish till 1pm. Then you have a massive lunch (they are big red meat eaters out there) with copious lashings of red wine (the Malbec is fab), a siesta then you go back out at 5.30pm and fish till dark which was about 9pm. Then back to the lodge for dinner and more booze. Tough eh ? The local rules dont allow fishing after 1 hour after sunset. To be honest it wasn't a big deal for us as remember it is autumn out there and it usually was cold at sundown and the fishing wasn't that hot then. Because the water was cold and at times, quite dirty you had to get down to the fish with a quick sinktip or sinker and I did well on a Rio AFS sink4. The guides recommended a big chartreuse/black leech & they did work well. I did well on the black Snaelda. Some of the fish behaved brilliantly leaping all over the place but the guides reckoned January/early Feb is the best time. The water is warmer, the fish fresher & more active taking small nymphs & flies & fighting much harder. Any seatroot lover such as yourself should try this experience if you can. For footage of a 30pounder being played and landed on Villa Maria earlier this year have a look at this : www.lax-a.is/news/news//nr/8342

I now know where I intend going for my 50th Birthday. Fortunately I have 5 years to save up.... ;D
What a superb destination Jim and thanks for such a great report. Some friends of mine have just returned from Patagonia and she caught 2 of over 20lbs. I'm looking forward to hearing more.
A trip of a lifetime indeed.

I now know where I intend going for my 50th Birthday. I'm coming with you. Thanks for that Jim - looked like a small dolphin the laddie had on. Interesting soundtrack - The Clash and Jimi Hendrix.

Great stuff Jim, but now we know what you get up to when your wife is all alone fishing for Brownies in the Trossachs.
