There are many packages out there, both free & paid for, which cover the essential PC protections:
antivirus (incl. trojans etc) antispam firewall anti-banner registration entry cleaners ant-spyware
and I would strongly recommend everyone with a PC - obviously ALL here on the forum - to spend the time (& perhaps ~£25 for paid full packages with updates) to get these installed on every machine you use for any internet access.
Prevention with a bit of effort and little payment is a million percent better than the heartache of losing files & data!!

Hi Col, I used to use Zonealarm (free version), then later converted to Zonealarm Pro ($39- ) with all the bells & whistles, but when ZA pro 'screwed' my PC up big-time, I didn't renew, and simply went down the 'free to download' route again, and, co-incidentally, use AVG for the wee virussy bu**ers, and a couple of other 'free' whizz-bang programs for the rest of the potential problems - and most of the free programs will be updated free also, but instead of all functions in one package or program, you have to have a few different ones. One of the other biggest things is, if you have a lot of data (word files, pictures, video, emails you want to keep etc.) - just do a regular back-up (weekly) to a seperate (external) hard drive. Dontcha just hate to see a grown man cry when all his saved pictures, videos & links to you-tube (& beyond) are zapped in a millisecond? Mike

I use Norton Internet Security, not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. I've only had to reinstall my operating system twice in the last 12 months Good shout about external hard drives. C drive just for windows and other essentials.

I had Norton with BT Internet and was also plagued with Spam Mail. I then switched to McAfee Total Protection and have not had one piece of spam in the last 3 years. It costs £50 a year for the McAfee package and it upgrades the software automatically while you are online.
I would also recommend buying a portable Hard Drive and backing up all of your important files. You just plug them in to your USB port and transfer files manually or by synchro. You can pick up a 160GB portable hard drive for £60.

I also use AVG free for anti-virus, Anti-rootkit and Anti-spyware wih Zone alarm free to block unwanted snooping on my computer. All work well and I have very few problems with them.

I changed from Norton (slooooow) to the free AVG stuff. No complaints. Thanks for the recommendation.
