Finally managed my first trip out last night. Reports suggested the Teign was doing well so off I went. Typically I managed to catch a swirling wind, clear sky and bright moon all at once. The moon did provide an impressive back light with which to watch some fascinating sea trout behaviour though (in other words I blanked). In low water I concentrated my efforts towards the head of a good pool. Starting at 9.30 it remained quiet for the first hour, but then a regular procession of big noisy sea trout punctuated the vain fishing effort. Showing first in mid pool with a hefty splash the fish could then be heard ascending the glide in more gentle fashion shortly after. The bright moon meant I caught the odd glimpse of "my biggest of the season". Packing up at just gone midnight without so much as a nibble, the action carried on consistently. Walking back towards the tail, and weir end, all was deadly still. So a blank session, but great value all the same.

Well done for making the effort Rob. It's too early for N Wales and we still seem to be be getting cold nights up here.
At least you saw some fish, cause for hope!

Back out again last night. Had the Dart to myself. They obviously knew better . Nothing doing, and I mean nothing until midnight. Hooked a fish in the tail of a pool, stumbled, lost contact with the line, and off she went. After that....nothing doing. Unlucky fly - 1 inch Shani Stoat.

Managed to christen the Shani Stoat last night with a 2 1/2 lb sea trout on the upper Teign. It's been cracking the flags all week in Torquay, but up on Dartmoor there had been a spate just a few days ago. Conditions not ideal, but managed to winkle one in the shallow tail of a pool. Lots of acrobatics and a few hard runs. I'm off the mark!

Well done Rob, always nice to get an early fish.
A few sightings have been reported up here so I had my first sortie last night - nothing seen.

Well done Rob Managed to christen the Shani Stoat... The what? Tell us more. There have been encouraging reports from other rivers along the south coast, so much so in fact that it has been worthwhile for the poachers to turn out with their nets. The EA promised action but nobody held their breath... and then bugger me if they didn't go out and catch them red handed this week Everyone is now awaiting news of a derisory fine Andy

Shani, my wife, liked the idea of a fly named after her. I tied up a silver stoat variant with goat hair. I suggested Shani Goat, but it didn't appeal.

I'm a bit late getting off the mark this season. Various factors have conspired to keep me away from the river at night, but last night I paid a visit to the Upperton area of the Upper Teign fishery and was well rewarded! Plenty of surface activity from 10pm onwards to keep the spirits up, but no takers until 11.30, when I had the most violent take of a muddler that nearly wrenched the rod from my hands. Thereafter I had an exhilarating tussle with a lively sea trout which saw it powerfully run to the limits of the pool on several occasions and severely test the non existant drag on my trusty dragonfly reel. Thinking I'd be after mainly "schoolies" in early August I had a 9 foot #6 rod which was tested to the absolute limit. With the fish finally exhausting itself, time for the net. Oh eck! I'm 6 foot above water level on a high bank! Gingerly I lean over, fully extending the net handle, the fish is drawn over the net, and in. SPLASH! Mason falls (feet first fortunately) into the river below. The fish surely knows now its number is up. ;D Getting out of a river, wet to the thighs is no easy matter. Tipped the scales at 4lb.My best to date.

Well done Rob, you will have had a good tussle with that one.

It was indeed worth the soaking. Good job it wasn't 12 foot deep though!

The sea trout where in evidence in early April on the Teign when I was out, but few and far between. Last night, I had a trip out and was dissappointed not to catch. Rising fish in every pool I tried. Sadly they where in playful mood, taking short. I tried everything- Alexandra tube, muddler, you name it. Certainly too cold to be confident of scoring, only 4degrees at midnight. Conditions otherwise perfect- water "as low as possible" on the alloted stretch. Its so low they do well to get there. Lets hope it warms up quickly. I'm feeling confident.

Saw dawn break at the river this morning. No reward for my efforts or the early start (bed early, up at 2.45!) but amazing to see the ST flapping over shrunken glides to get further upstream. Still cold (3 degrees at 5am). Warmer weather or some rain needed to liven them up.

Finally managed to "score" with one of Dai's snakes. A 3lb ST falling to the charms of the Alexandra. Thanks Dai.
It's been hard going of late with the surface lure getting all the attention, and that has generally been swirls at the fly that don't stick.
Last night though broke the spell of warm days and cold nights we've been having. It was warm, dark and still. The water low. Perfect.

Not a classic season this for Sea Trout fishing. The prime month of June all but a washout, mind you the salmon anglers have benefitted for sure.
I have been out on each of the last three nights and I have not known it to be so quiet. I had the company of an otter the first two days, and tonight when the sun went down a thick mist descended. The fish stayed down. We are still 6 inches above the ideal ST fishing height. Still, knowing that your next fish could be an 8lber keeps us going.

Not a classic season this for Sea Trout fishing. The prime month of June all but a washout Second year on the trot for us up the east coast too Rob - certainly in terms of favourable night conditions / levels. Its no surprise that CC+DP have been picking away on the sea troot front this week which appears to be the most 'settled' week in terms of levels since the end of May. All we need now is a bit of rain to bring in the grilse ! ;D
