Nice fish Andy, the S Esk is having a great season.
Must admit that my night fishing forays have been fairly limited so far, but there again I do need my beauty sleep. ;D

Some cracking troot being caught now: Well done to all! I've been unable to get out at all to take advantage of some great conditions and good offers of fishing as, at the moment, it's nose up against the working grindstone Soon to be rectified, but not for the seatrout! Mike

Had a night fishing session on the Conwy last night, first in a while.
I was fishing a noted holding pool known as Tyn y Cae, where the Lledr and Conwy meet. The pool has a classic tail with fast rapids and falls leading down to a massive pool called Beaver Pool. A great spot when the fish are running, but they are usually knackered after running up!
The area is known as Fairy Glen, but is more noted for fierce midges than fairies.
Seemed to be a few fish in the pool, caught fish of 2lb, 1lb & 1lb fairly early on and also had quite a few pulls to a Squirrel Blue & Silver on a size 7 silver salar (lovely hook for sea trout flies).
Then about midnight a big moon emerged from behind the clouds and shone down the pool. It was like daylight - I could see the face of an angler on the opposite bank - or was it a big fairy? ;D
Things went very quiet. Before packing in, i put on a 2" surface lure and a 3lb+ fish exploded from the water and took it. Had it on for a minute until the hooks pulled.
I wouldn't normally try a surface lure in bright moonlight, but that fish obviously hasn't read Falkus. ;D

I'm sure I've read somewhere of sea trout foul hooking themselves. Or maybe I'm just going barmy. Anyway, I managed a peal of a pound or so last night that fought like a tiger. As I drew it into the net I could see why. The poor fella was hooked firmly just in front of the tail. The "take" felt legitimate enough, I was fishing close to the tail of a weir pool on the Dart with a slow figure of eight. Two casts later I hooked and played a monster for several minutes, intent on heading back to sea over the weir. I managed to keep the fish in the pool, but had to walk it back upstream 20 yards to my net, and ping. Gone. I expect it was easily double figures . Either that or a grilse hooked in the tail. Rob

Bad luck with the big 'un Rob.
I 've had a strange sea trout season myself - I haven't foul hooked any sea trout or bats this year!
On a small river like the Elwy, it's all too easy to (unintentionally) foul hook a fish in the relatively shallow pools, even when fishing a floater with a 5' polyleader.
I've hooked at least one bat every season I've nightfished, but not this year - on reflection I usually hook them on the Elwy, which I've hardly fished this season.

Can't say I've had the pleasure of hooking a bat yet. Maybe they don't like what I tie?

I had one of those nights last night that Falkus mentions in his book. I was fortunate to find a pool that was holding a decent shoal of fish, but catching them was another matter. The fish were nipping the fly but not staying on. Tried small flies, secret weapons, big flies, surface lure etc - it was the smaller flies getting the pulls, but they weren't sticking. Net result after 2 hours fishing: 3/4lb fresh herling landed. 3/4lb fish lost after a minutes play. A good 3 - 4lb fish lost after a few seconds About 15 pulls. It was good fun while it lasted.
