Top Pic 1st Gerard Downey (centre) 2nd Ruairi Costello (left) 3rd James Chalmers (right) The results of the Spey Omega open Instenational 15ft rod Spey casting Competition, 40degree change of direction were 1st Gerard Downey, Foxford, Co.Mayo 161'4" 2nd Ruairi Costello, Scarriff, Co.Clare 151' 3rd James Chalmers, Scotland 131' 4th Derek Doyle, Wicklow 116' 5th Cathal Doherty, Donegal 109' 6th Michael Egan, Ballina, Co.Mayo 103'6" Bottom Pic Left to Right, Ruairi Costello (2nd), James Chalmers (3rd), Michael Egan (6th), Shane Egan (junior winner), Gerard Downey (1st), Derek Doyle (4th), Cathal Doherty (5th), Martin Kylie. Weather conditions were great for the weekend event organised by Ruairi Costello and sponsored by Pat Nolan of Premier Angling Supplies Nenagh. A very pleasant day on the Saturday with plenty of sunshine and calm conditions, and almost as good on the Sunday but with cloud cover and light wind. Certainly worth going just to see Ruairi Costello, Gerard Downey and James Chalmers cast if nothing else. On the Saturday in practice Gerard Downey threw 169 feet and Ruairi Castello threw 160 feet in the calm, there was no wind whatsoever on Saturday. A good result in the finals on Sunday for the Carron team, the top three were using Carron rods and lines, top four were using Carron lines, fifth and sixth place used Emerald World Master 84 ft head lines. A good turnout of spectators from Limerick and the South. Unfortunately the Norwegians did not make it this year and newly married Andrew Toft was not there due to being on honeymoon. The Spey casting workshop went well also with seven people over the two days, a demo given at one stage by James Chalmers greatly added to the enjoyment of it. What have you Scots got to say about being beaten by the Irish? I thought you guys invented Spey casting?

Well James ? ;D
I'm actually 'off' eastern European stock therefore fail to feel 'the hurt' as others might. Congratulations to all participants and winners.
I take it he paid the 5 euro entry fee ?

Excellent event, good to see competitive casting on the Castleconnell fishery. John Enright past world distance champion and maker of the world famous Enright rods would be well pleased if he were still around. Great promotion of the sport in the area well done to all involved. I have attached an old picture of the village to give you an idea of the history. .The shop in the backround was enrights.

Minitube Thanks for taking the time to post up the results and the photos, it was good to meet up with you at Castleconnell. "What have you Scots got to say about being beaten by the Irish? I thought you guys invented Spey casting"? Well James ? ;D I take it he paid the 5 euro entry fee ? Tippy "Howr they hingin" I done my best , I tried the old bull act but it didny work, I let the young ones batter away at it all weekend hopefully knackering themselves oot, then I casually strolled down paid my 5 euros and got gubbed by two Irishmen That cleary wisny in the script of the tale. In the qualifiers Gerad Downey AKA The Moy Green here cast 169 ft 7 inches in running water with a 40 degree angle change, and Ruairi Costello cast 160 feet, the best I could muster was 149 feet 9 inches so you could safely say it was the luck of the Irish, or that simply I had nae chance. Castleconnell your dead on, John Enright was a legend of a man who you dont hear too much about, 1895 was his first competition win & 1896 was the year he became the World Casting Champion casting with a 20 foot Castleconnell greenheart rod. James Chalmers.
