Are the latest rods, reels and lines better than what they were 10 years ago, or are the marketing people just good at making us part with our cash?
Guideline Le Cie or B&W Norway?
Lamson Litespeed or Hardy Marquis?
Guideline Power Taper Shooting Head or Wetcel 2 DT sinker?
Cascade conehead or brass tube?
Just a few examples, pick your weapons of choice, and let the people decide! ;D

The older examples you gave are certainly more robust.

The older examples you gave are certainly more robust. But you don't get a lifetime guarantee with the older gear. ;D

I would go with the newer tackle any day of the week, especially the lines (especially shooting heads). I remember the pain after a few days fishing with my old 16ft Diawa amorthous and #12 wetcell II! I also prefer the new style of rods, but wish they were as robust as rods used to be. Im wondering how many guidlines im going to go through this season after snapping 3 last year (2 on fish ).....

It's a shame, because modern rods are a delight to use, but are they 'fit for purpose'?

I would say that the Older reels are certainly more Robust, I have been using my Marquis #10 every season since 1980 and still going strong, As Graham Said, You didnt seem to need Lifetime gaurantees back then.

Cheers Hornet 15ft LPXe, 2 mid sections and a tip section. Cracking rod but not the toughest. Both the mid section breaks were in the same place, after a few months of heavy use damage to the cloth started to show then they went bang!

How did you get on with the returns. Cheers Hornet I could'nt have asked for better. The second time I broke the rod they replaced the whole rod free of charge. I also have not had to pay for any of the sections I have broken which is top quality customer service.

Thinks to do with the ever desire to make a 15ft DD rod as light as possible. their getting down to near old weight trout rods nowadays so some thing has to go when the pressure is on the rod.
Mate lost what would have been his PB when his rod broke at the middle section whilst playing a good fish. Happy chappie he was not.

My 3 piece lpxe has gone twice now both times it was the middle section, and my mates top section went. To be fair to Guildeline the replacement service was excellent. The rod snapped on the first day of a week at Aberlour with jock, a few emails later to and from sweden a rod was dispatched and i got it a few days later. However, as a precaution, we have had a spare break claim and now have a spare between us. A said and done a brilliant rod

The older rods seemed to go soft after a few years of service, something I have not had with new rods, but some do seem to snap a bit to easily. I know of one fisher who in one season broke 5 hardy angels (all 15ft) but after a while hardy did fess up to a problem... He no longer uses hardy rods. I have 6 lpxe rods from 9ft 9 weights up to double handers and touch wood no breaks yet, although I did send one back as I felt the cork (filler) was wearing a bit quick and they changed the whole rod free of charge no questions, so good customer service once again, are the problems of weak rods down to mass production and sometimes bad manufacture/quality control or as has been said before is it the price for ever lighter rods.
