I recall watching a "hooked on Scotland" program some years back where they were fly fishing in the sea for sea trout in the northern isles.Has anyone tried it around the Tay estuary?,I've seen the odd small finnock jumping when walking along Lunan bay and often fancied the idea of having a go.

They can be caught in the sea, but you need writen permission to fish for sea trout in the sea from whoever owns the fishing rights at that point. The situation is different up in Orkney and Shetland where udal law dating back to their Norse past applies.

Not that I've ever done it myself but I know a few guy's who have taken sea trout on the fly at various points between Tayport and a wee spot known as Jocks Hole immediately downstream of Balmerino - the deep channel runs close in at this side of the river. Again, not sure but I think they use 'streamer' style flies / lures. Particularly good 'marks' are off the shingle beach just downstream of the road bridge and off the rocks at Newport. Remember - ye didnae hear that here.

From what I gather from reading the reports on WSF over the years, the Fife side is better for sea trout. Wormit (?) crops up in reports quite often. It seems to be where the guys fly fishing/spinning for sea trout go.

I fish with some of the WSF lads in the winter for the Cod,but most of the Tay anglers don't fly fish.My intention was to fish from the rocky marks from Easthaven round to Usan, thinking that there might be chance of Pollock or even Bass if the Sea Trout don't show. I am also planning a go at fly fishing in the surf"bonefish style "with some shrimp and crab patterns, that's assuming we get a summer.
