I was thinking of booking a couple of nights at the Tayside Hotel in June, and wonder if anyone else had stayed there. What were your thoughts about the place.

Have a quick look at the trip advisor reviews . www.tripadvisor.co.uk. This usually gives you a true impression of a place.

Good hotel. I haven't stayed overnight there but spent many good evenings there. Decent bar meals, nice lounge and good bar. A good few ghillies drink there as well as fishers. My pals often stay there so sure the rooms are fine. Late June, early July can be a quiet time on the river so hotel may be quiet too. However maybe you'll be out fishing to all hours? sea trout fishing can be good at this time and Stanley's a good spot.

As Neil says - a good fishing hotel steeped in history. You could try Ballathie a bit further up the road as an alternative.

We stayed the weekend in the Ballathie Hotel, expensive I would imagine compered to the Tay hotel.
But the view out of the balconey over the Tay was superb.

Ballathie is nice, more of a country house hotel, without the local atmosphere of the Tayside. Staying in the old house part of the hotel is expensive but the fishermans lodges can be very reasonable. Couldn't really post on Ballathie without mentioning the ghillies- George and Guzzler, few better

Thanks for your replies. Sounds like it should be a good place to stay. Tayside Hotel have offered me a good price in which to stay there for a couple of nights. Far cheaper than what their website offers a room at. To be fair they had as I can gather actually put the wrong price on the website to start with and then they changed their price. So I did contact them and was offered to cheaper price. I will hopefully be fishing in mid June on the Stobhall beat of which I fished last year. Thanks Y.Esk

Sounds like it should be a good place to stay. A bit of well intentioned advice - should you find yourself in an arm wrestling competition with Geordie Stewart, his right arm isn't as strong as it once was. Enjoy your stay - hopefully Ernie can put you on the end of a fish or two.

Both Bob and Ernie were great. The stories they came out with were tops. Most of then absolute rubbish (fishersmans tale). As for the arm wrestling, I think I need to call in you local boys to come and give me a hand. Oh, and buy me a drink........lol. Y.Esk

I'm sure a lady of your standing and recognised angling prowess will have no shortage of comp nips being proffered of an evening Kate. PM me closer to the time and at the very least I can pop into the TSH to say "hi" and perhaps act as a 'towel man' should you decide to take on Geordie. Learn this - it would go down an absolute tun at 1am in the bar. 30 gm Toby whapped upstream and retrieved at a rate of knots if all else fails

I have my toby salmo's ready and waiting to go. That is what I caught my first Tay salmon on last year despite a good go with the fly. Bob swears by the salmos. As they say just add water.

Had a very enjoyable time here. Would recommend it to any one. Already enquired into rates for next year.
