I forgot to add that novices should start tying their own flies as soon as they can. It is a lot easier than it looks and it is great when you catch one on one of your own tyings.

I'll second that CT. A wealth of knowledge that would be hard to pack in a book. BR Gerry

1. Know & Trust your equipment 2. Get to know the water(s) you will be fishing 3. Always fish with a good buddy 4. Know your knots, and check these and your leader more often than the state of your fly 5. As in the hipocratic oath - first do no harm to the fish.

If you have accepted an invitation (and turned up!) always always thank the person who has offered you the fishing.
Simple?.... yes. But not everyone does so. A thanks at the end of the day is mandatory. An additional 'thank you' at a later date perhaps the next day, even by text, goes a long long way to show genuine appreciation and future invitations are likely! Cheers F

Take note novices - should you ever receive an invitation to fish as a guest and for whatever reason cant make it then at least have the decency to let your host know. If this should happen TWICE, and to the same host, don't expect to be given the opportunity to make it a hat trick ..... as it aint gonna happen

The etiquette thread and this one have provided much appreciated info especially on the finer points of pool rules. I do believe however that your average chap understands the basics of manners and the use of the telephone. There are many who do not adhere to the general principles of common decency i.e a phone call and explanation - there are men and women out there what will punch you in the face for a laugh apparently I cannot imagine the type of person who is invited to fish a special piece of water and can't be arsed to turn up without a simple phone call though. Maybe he'd died or got aliened into the sky?

If you have an invitation to fish a beat free or charge, and the ONLY thing you have to do is sign a Gyrodactylus Declaration and POST IT BACK, do so - it will stand you in good stead and may avoid your invitation to explain to a public enquiry sometime in the future.
Damn parasites ! The Gyrodac's I mean.

Brought to attention again is the weighing of salmon - Feb 08 Fly Fishing & Flytying magazine - letters 'Paying our way' - where Mr Gaskell points out, quite rightly that Bruce Sandison was wrong in his (BS) opinion that it is impossible to weigh large salmon (referring to the first article in the 'News' section of FF&FT Dec 07 issue regarding the Ness monster fish of Oct 07). As I have previously stated on the forum, it is not only possible, but also very practical to weigh a large salmon; you just need to be prepared for that fish of a lifetime. All you require can be carried in a small pocket of your jacket or bag at the river - for every trip! Weigh scale - allow up to 80lbs range Lightweight carp sling - for about a fiver! Tailor's tape measure - 6 feet Digital camera & have a witness! - should be fishing with a buddy anyway Mike
