Hi Folks,
New to the forum but have been a regular reader for a while
I've been a worm and fly angler for salmon for a number of years but due to very low water I've recently invested in a 9ft spinning rod and some daiwa and salmo rapala-type minnow lures.
I'm casting upstream and spinning back with the rod tip high up and the lure darts just below the surface. My problem is that I've turned two salmon this week both have attacked the lure but I've failed to hook them.
My question is do I strike straight away or do I let the salmon take and turn?
Did I miss because I'm too slow at the strike or did I pull it out of the fish's mouth?
Appreciate some help!!

Keep reeling and only strike when the fish turns. Raps work best when cast slightly upstream and then fished from square to down stream. You can then fish them slower at a better depth. Where do you fish? On my river in low water, worm is the only way to catch a fish.

Hi Rob,
I fish the Clare river in Ireland. The beat I fish holds resting fish in gin clear water with barely any flow and only about 3' deep so worm is mostly a non runner. Thanks for the advice, I'll try holding off on the strike next time.
