In my view the Umba is in the top three Kola rivers, but it has been heavily poached by local people using all manner of device - from explosives to nets. I fished it on a number of occasions between 1993 and 2000. The autumn run of big 'ice' fish is still impressive. The Umba is a big, complicated river with lake systems in the upper catchment to maintain water levels. In Stalin's time biologists experimented by introducing pink salmon and other Pacific species which, in my view, haven't done much damage. It would be hard to damage the Umba permanently, because it's productivity is massive. Adipose

Adipose If you place the Umba in the top 3 of the Kola rivers, what are the other 2 rivers in the top 3? & what measure or definition would you use to allow one to determine positional placement (or ranking) of a river - beauty, ease to fish, size, number of fish, size of fish, local facilities, ......whatever? & what other Kola rivers have you fished? & do you think that there may have been some changes in the 12 years since you last fished the Umba? Great video but why on these kind of films do they accompany it with the most awful, bravado fueled, mind numbing music.....

Great questions Speyducer.
Based on my experience of fishing the Rivers Kola, Strelna, Vazuga, Pana, Umba, Karlovka, Yokanga, Varzina, Penka, Sidirovka & Ponoi I will stick to my guns that Umba slots in at 3 in my reckoning. My measures are: a) genuine wilderness hinterland b) complex stock structure with range of fish sizes and abundance of component populations c) competent management & reasonable prices d) always the prospect of a 15Kg fish, or better. e) acceptable accommodation and food e) access to local people, culture, language and villages In other words, a rounded experience!
From the purely fishing viewpoint I think the Umba stands up with Yokanga , Varzina and Karlovka which is a bit surprising because the Umba estuary is in the White Sea, not the Barents Sea.
I have heard that things are now better on the Umba than they were in the 1990s, so I guess a visit there might be even better than I remember it. Late August or September is a time I would like to try.
So my views are personal, not really objective. Adipose

Maybe we are just getting old A lot of Scandinavian videos have a language selection so it would be good if they had a range of background music selections as well ;D ;D
