Forum members may be aware that from next week the government has imposed an extra 2p per litre on road fuel. Do members perceive this as a good move to save the planet from global warming. Or do they think upon it as another extra tax on rural life, which along with the horrendous extra tax inspired cost of sometimes necessary four wheel drive vehicles for country dwellers. Will this tax go towards improving country roads or will it fund another useless grandiose scheme.

There is no doubt that any extra price or duty on petrol/diesel has a disproportinate effect on residents who have the privilige of living in the country (as opposed to towns & cities). However, as you are well aware, there are a substantial proportion of townies & urbanites who drive the 4x4 gas guzzlers, where perhaps 99% would only ever go off road if they happened to accidentally park with one wheel on the grass verges! The general decline in countryside infrastructure (local shops, post-offices, petrol stations, & public transport) has been going on for a very long time, & I'm sure that the treasury couldn't give a monkey's about who pays the taxes, proportionate or not. Another sad day, but some would see it as the price one pays to live in greener & more pleasant (overall) surroundings. Mike

i cannot live without my 2 cars (thats not bragging) i live in a rural area with only 120 residents the public transport does not arrive till 09.15 as i start work at 07.30 this is not an option my children cannot get a bus to school untill they go to high school even though the school bus goes past the house so thats why the second car is needed most also my wife is a home carer & needs a car just to do this job so as we cannot do any less miles as the cost of fuel goes up this cannot be a green tax but just a penalty for living in the country

Green taxes are just another way for the government to extort money, this money will disappear with the rest.
It should be a warning sign when we have a situation where so many young people are choosing to live abroad because they will have a decent standard of living outside the UK, not wishing to be slaves to a mortgage company for the rest of their lives.
