I have been laughing away to myself ever since the Ness salmon was landed. In 1994 I caught.......and weighed, what is the current British Record of 169.5lbs. Then on October 4 I landed a skate which, according to the charts weighed 173lbs. So I could have offered an opinion on what Ms Ballantyne would have thought of Mr Milne getting a record based on a guesstimate. Having been out all night skate hunting I will be keep this short. You cannot, and should not , be able to claim a record if the fish is not weighed on certified scales. Mr Milne did the right thing in putting the welfare of the fish first and putting the fish back. He knows what he caught and fellow anglers should be happy with that. I will not even bother contacting the British Record Committee..rules are there to be followed (thats the water bailiff in me talking). Last Thursday another guy had a 174lb skate and on Monday morning I had one of 183lbs. Last night I had a tiddler...........157lbs. Do they fight?..........yes, and they can move surprisingly quickly for such big fish. I do salmon fish regularly when conditions are suitable on the island. I am now going to have to adjust from chucking 6oz of lead and a whole mackerel 60-80 yards to casting a wee lump of brass on the Tweed at Fairnilee next week. Suffice to say for the first wee while the guys on the other bank wont need to duck!
