Not sure what actually constitutes a good single handed rod, I have used 10 foot 6 and 8 weights on the South Esk in the past, but am eying up a 9 foot 5 weight, a Hardy four piece, am I asking for trouble, especially if a Grilse grabs hold?

Not at all B. I would rather see a a 5 weight line coming down on a sea trout pool than an 8 weight. Your 9 footer will handle grilse no problem.

As Andy say's Burnie, you will have no problems with a 9' rod. Fishing heavy at night is not advisable, the Troot are far too easily spooked.

Not being the most patient of types, I've just been on the 140 mile round trip(twice in two days) and bought it, glad you gents approve. Zenith 9 foot #5 with an Ultralite DD reel free, plus a Mach line WF-5-F and backing, also free and loaded on the reel when I arrived(having phoned to ask them to put one aside) a very attractive offer, very pleased, now just need some fish.........................

I've used that rod for the last two seasons and have landed trout to 4lb no problem.
Having seen some demos on youtube showing how robust these sintrix rods are, don't be afraid of playing fish hard and putting a good bend in the rod!

I use 2 set ups now, and one is a 9ft for 5 weight. The other is a slightly longer rod for a 7 weight.

Thanks Rob, on a dry fly too, a bit lean but fought like a tiger, hoping to get on the South Esk as soon as the water drops a bit.

Always good to get the first bend in a new rod B - well done. It does look "lean" as you say. Maybe on a diet. Here's to a few more over the coming weeks.

That's why I returned it Andy, a good feed on Daddy longlegs could see it weighing well over 2 pounds in a few weeks.

Thanks Bill, I was not expecting a fish quite that big from a small river in the weather conditions, just shows we don't know everything and the books are not always right. Really pleasant surprise and gave the rod a bit of a work out, Sea trout next I hope.

That's a nice trout to get from a small river, hopefully the sea trout will follow on your next trip.
